Ohio Prep Sportswriters: Courier staffers win awards

COLUMBUS — The Courier’s Dave Hanneman finished third in the Division 2 Writer of the Year honors and had several stories receive top-three finishes as the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association announced its 2013 writing and photography contest winners at the OPSWA annual meeting Thursday in Columbus.
Hanneman’s column, “The Big Guy Is Going To Be Missed,” about former Courier sports editor Larry Alter, tied for second for column of the year. Hanneman also received a tie for second in the game story category for his article on Leipsic’s loss to Cleveland Villa-Angela St. Joseph in the 2013 Division IV boys state basketball championship.
In the investigative/enterprise category, The Courier’s Jamie Baker earned second-place honors with his story “Sports Teams, Bands Open to Home-Schoolers.” Hanneman took home third-place with the cover story, “Area Girls Teams Loaded With Veteran Talent” for The Courier’s basketball tab.
The Writer of the Year award for each division were: Jon Spencer (Mansfield News Journal, Division 1), Mark Hazelwood (Sandusky Register, Division 2), Albert Grindle (Medina Gazette, Division 3) and Jarrod Ulrey (Columbus ThisWeek Newspaper, Division 4). A total of 596 entries from 74 contestants were entered in the contest.
