College sports: UF softball sweeps Ashland

ASHLAND — Emily Reynolds blasted a two-run home run in the first inning of the University of Findlay’s second game against Ashland University, while Bonnie Zappitelli pitched a five-hit complete-game shutout as the Oilers’ softball team split a doubleheader with the Eagles on Wednesday.
Findlay (20-15, 11-11 GLIAC) looked to have control of the first game, leading 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ashland’s Cayla Seidler hit a walk-off three-run home run to give the Eagles (22-15, 11-9 GLIAC) the win.
Tawna Whited (14-7) picked up the loss for Findlay, and she had two hits, including an RBI-double, at the plate. The Oilers had just seven hits on the day.

Baseball swept
ASHLAND — Mike Lewandowski’s RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Ashland University a 5-4 win against the University of Findlay in the second game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Eagles took the first game 5-0.
Findlay (11-24, 8-17 GLIAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning in the second game. Joe Sickler ripped a 2-run double to get the scoring started, and the Oilers scored two unearned runs after that.
After that, however, Findlay was held scoreless and the Eagles clawed their way back to improve to 21-15 overall and 11-10 in the GLIAC.
Vince Frate (8-3) pitched a complete-game shutout for Ashland in the first game, allowing six hits in seven innings. Mackenzie Hampshire had an RBI-double in the first inning, and Alex Sortwell and Austin Walts had an RBI-single in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.
Sickler had three hits on the day, including a triple, to lead Findlay. Peter Yorgen hit three singles in the first game, and Logan Harrah doubled and singled in the second game.
