Prep softball: Mohawk holds off New Riegel rally

SYCAMORE — Mohawk built a 9-4 lead, then survived New Riegel’s gutsy seventh-inning rally to knocked off the No. 2-ranked Blue Jackets 9-7 on Wednesday in a Midland Athletic League battle of league leaders.
Clara Adelsperger had four hits and Mackenzie Sowers had three. Both had two-run doubles for Mohawk and Julie Adelsperger belted a solo home run as the Warriors improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the MAL.
Lauren Zoeller singled and hit a solo homer for New Riegel (12-2, 2-1 MAL). Taylor Arbogast (2B, 1B, 2 RBI) and Brittany Gillig (2-1B, BI) also had two hits.

CAREY — Carey snapped a 1-1 tie in a big way by scoring five runs in the third and fourth innings on its way to an 11-1 Midland Athletic League softball victory over Hopewell-Loudon on Wednesday.
Ali Rymer (5-4) went the first three innings allowing one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts to get the win. Sydney Wentling finished up the final two innings for the Blue Devils (6-5 overall, 2-2 MAL).
Kelsey Coppus worked all four innings for Hopewell-Loudon in taking the loss.
Rymer tripled and singled driving in three runs. Dani Bardinelli-Clark doubled and drove in three runs.
Hannah Draper added a pair of singles and two RBI and Makenzie Wentling tripled and singled for Carey.

KANSAS — Morgan Gangwer pitched a complete-game shutout, allowed nine hits and struck out seven to lead Lakota over Fostoria St. Wendelin 5-0 in a Midland Athletic League softball game on Wednesday.
Nikkia Cooper tripled, doubled and singled to lead Lakota (8-2, 3-1 MAL) at the plate. Breanna Ray and Gangwer each hit a triple as well.
Mikayla Gilliland ripped a double and two singles for Fostoria St. Wendelin (4-6, 0-3 MAL). Meghan Reiter picked up the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out eight and walking two in six innings.

Hill and Taylor each had a triple, and Jordyn Wright doubled, singled and drove in three runs for the Falcons (7-7 overall, 2-4 NCC), which scored seven runs in the fourth inning.
Taylor Farmer picked up the win, allowing four unearned runs on four hits in five innings.

Justeen Searfoss singled twice for the Rams (8-4, 5-1 NCC), which had nine hits (all of them singles). Sara Gier and Kalene Johnson each scored twice and had a single as Upper Sandusky scored four runs in the first inning.
Wynford (1-12, 0-6 NCC) had four errors.

Tiffany Welty tripled and doubled, Kylee Ricker ripped a three-run homer and Liz Schimmoeller added a pair of singles and two RBIs for Miller City (4-4 overall, 2-2 PCL).
Melissa Jorey had two singles and two RBIs and Laine Laudick added a pair of singles and an RBI for Kalida (2-6, 1-2).

Macala Ashbaugh doubled and got the win for the Lancers (6-6) as she struck out three batters and walked two. Teammate Kelsey Mohr added a double.
Jenny Burgei doubled to lead Ottoville (1-7).

Amburgey struckout five in six innings of work. Ashley Sumner pitched one scoreless inning for the Bulldogs (9-3) striking out two.
Sumner doubled and singled and Amburgey had two singles and an RBI to lead Ada at the plate.
Katie Furer doubled for Ridgemont (5-9).

ROSSFORD — Elmwood’s softball team outhit Rossford 10-5 on Wednesday. But five walks and three Elmwood errors allowed Rossford to make the most of those five hits and earned the Bulldogs a 6-3 Northern Buckeye Conference victory.
Lyndsey Skala lined a two-run single during a five-run fourth-inning rally that put Rossford (9-4, 2-2 NBC) on top for good. Jessica Kulczak doubled in a run and Claire Verbosky singled in another.
Olivia Myers and Madison Arnold had two base hits each and Kristi Reiser had a double and a single for Elmwood (8-3, 2-1 NBC), which entered Wednesday’s game in a virtual tie for the league lead with Woodmore (8-0, 3-0) and Eastwood (11-0, 3-0).
