Prep baseball: L-B inches closer to BVC title

Liberty-Benton jumped on top early and held off visiting Arlington for a 4-2 Blanchard Valley Conference baseball win on Wednesday.
The victory moved the Eagles closer to a share of the BVC title as they improved to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. L-B has a key makeup game with Van Buren (3-1 BVC) scheduled for tonight.
Jared Neiling put together another strong outing on the mound for the Eagles allowing just two runs on six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Nick Affholder allowed four runs on four hits with seven walks and three strikeouts in taking the loss for Arlington (11-4, 4-2).
Caleb Russell smacked a double and drove in a pair of runs. Alex Harter also drove in a run as the Eagles made the most of their five hits.
Tyler Richard had a double and two RBIs and Affholder and Zachary Durliat both added a pair of singles for the Red Devils.

McCOMB — Mitch Schroeder doubled and singled driving in a run as the Panthers stopped Pandora-Gilboa 5-3 in a Blanchard Valley Conference game.
Clay Dysert had a pair of singles with an RBI and Clay Grubb went the distance on the mound allowing just three runs to get the victory for McComb (12-3 overall, 5-1 BVC).
Alex Osborn doubled and singled and Dustin Rieman, Jacob Basinger and Brian Schneck each added two singles for Pandora-Gilboa (7-7, 3-3).

VANLUE — Despite committing eight errors, Cory-Rawson rode a dominating pitching performance from Matt Alspach and took care of Vanlue 6-3 in a Blanchard Valley Conference baseball game.
Alspach (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing an earned run on three hits while striking out four. Lance Butler led Cory-Rawson (2-10, 2-3 BVC) at the plate, ripping two doubles and driving in a run. Logan Cawley also had a single and two RBIs.
Nick Hagerty suffered the loss for Vanlue (2-9, 1-5 BVC) as Troy Ritter singled.

DOLA — Van Buren’s Isaac Sexton shut down Hardin Northern on three hits as the Black Knights whipped the Polar Bears 21 in a Blanchard Valley Conference baseball game.
Sexton allowed just one run with eight strikeouts in five innings to get the win.
Drew Conner swung a big bat for the Black Knights as he homered with a pair of singles. Sexton had a pair of doubles and Schuyler Turner added three singles for the Black Knights (10-4 overall, 4-1 BVC).
Jacob Gossard, Rylie Drumm and Kyle Lamb singled for Hardin Northern (0-11, 0-5).

LEIPSIC — Leipsic’s Dylan Schey allowed one run on one hit while striking out four batters in five innings and Pierce Henry ripped an RBI-triple in the fifth inning to lead the Vikings past Arcadia 3-1 in a Blanchard Valley Conference game.
Schey improved his record on the mound to 3-2, and the Vikings improved to 5-11 overall and 2-2 in the BVC.
Hayden Ramsey’s single was the lone hit for Arcadia (2-11, 1-6).
