Prep softball: Kirian fires 3-hit shutout

FREMONT — New Riegel’s Taylor Kirian had as many hits as she allowed in leading the Blue Jackets to a 5-0 Midland Athletic League softball win over Fremont St. Joseph on Wednesday.
Kirian limited St. Joe to three total hits, striking out three and walking one in a complete game effort. Kirian also connected on three of New Riegels’ 11 hits, including a home run.

NORTH BALTIMORE — Lakota opened an early 6-0 lead and weathered two late rallies by North Baltimore to post an 8-5 Midland Athletic League win over the Tigers on Wednesday.
Morgan Gangwer earned the pitching win and drove in two runs with a home run and a double. Aubrey Bickford also homered for the Raiders (10-4, 4-1 MAL).
Makayla Knight had three hits and Jasmine Bretz homered for North Baltimore (5-9, 1-3 MAL).

BLUFFTON — Bluffton jumped to a quick 5-1 lead and rode a strong pitching effort by Sami Fruchey to a 5-3 nonleague softball win over Elida.
Fruchey allowed five hits but only one earned run in improving her record to 6-2 and Bluffton’s to 7-2. Maddie Willis and Lauren Parkins both had two hits for the Pirates.

KENTON — Ashley Sumner pitched a complete-game six-hit shutout while striking out nine Kenton batters and walking two as Ada blanked Kenton 6-0 in nonconference softball action on Wednesday.
Alexis Gonzaga, Alexis Amburgey and Ashley Windle each singled and drove in a run for Ada (10-4), which scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second.

NEW WASHINGTON — Upper Sandusky scored four runs in the top of the first inning, then held on the rest of the way in slipping past Buckeye Central, 4-3, inWednesday’s North Central Conference softball matchup.
Kyla Cusac pitched six inning to get the win and Sara Gier came on to get the save. Jaa Smalley banged out three singles in helping the Rams improve to 10-5 overall, 6-2 in the league.
