Liberty-Benton’s girls track team won just three events at Saturday’s 40th annual L-B Invitational.
But the Eagles did what they do best — consistently score points in nearly every event — in winning the team title for the ninth consecutive year.
Liberty-Benton scored in all but the 800-meter run in racking up 126 points, beating Columbus Grove by 20 points for the championship. Arlington was third with 66 points while Pandora-Gilboa (631/2) and Van Buren (611/2) rounded out the top five.
Senior Megan Peplinski won the high jump (4-10) and long jump (16-7) and placed in both hurdles races to account for 28 of L-B’s point total.
She typifies the Eagles’ approach: score points and let the team total rise as the meet goes on.
“Everything’s for my team,” Peplinski said after placing third in the 300 low hurdles. “That’s kind of my thing. I’m put into places where I can be successful, so that’s how my events are chosen.”
Peplinksi’s versatility means she often won’t compete in the same events from meet to meet. She’s strong in the jumps and hurdles, but she can also pole vault, run middle distances and fill spots in relay quartets as needed.
Team aside, winning a pair of events Saturday was a shot in the arm.
“I should be a little better, the wind conditions were pretty bad today,” she said.
Peplinski nearly won a third event. She was leading the 100 intermediate hurdles late into the race but tripped over the final hurdle. Still, she picked herself up and placed seventh.
“It’s so frustrating,” she said. “I was seeded fourth going into the final, so I was nervous. I guess I was too low on the final hurdle. I got seventh, so that’s 2 points.”
L-B also won the 400 relay as Katie Hyre, Kelsey May, Tatum Teeple and Michaela Butler finished in 51.81.
Arlington’s Arden McMath won the 1,600 (5:34.60) and 3,200 (12:14.90) and helped the Red Devils to sixth in the 3,200 relay. She was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Performer.
“I’m happy with how I’ve been doing, and I definitely have goals that I want to attain this season,” McMath said. “I’m thinking about running in college, so my times need to come down.
“That’s part of the reason at some of the smaller meets this season, I’ve been pushing myself harder whereas last year it would be more of a practice meet.
McMath, who has competed at state in the 3,200 the past two years and the 1,600 last year, will attend Miami and hopes to walk on to the track and cross country teams.
“I want to get my (1,600) below 5:20. I’m at 5:26 now, so I have a few seconds to go.”
One meet record was set Saturday. Arlington’s Willow Thompson won the pole vault at 12-0, eclipsing the mark of 11-7 set by Columbus Grove’s Jenna Oard in 2006.
Thompson didn’t know she was attempting 12 feet. Arlington vault coach Clint Dillon told her the bar was set at 11-10, which would have been a personal best.
Meanwhile, Dillon had the meet officials set the height at 12. Thompson, last year’s Division III state champion, cleared the bar with ease on her first attempt.
“I can finally say my PR is 12,” Thompson said. “I’ve been waiting for that for a long time.”
Dillon explained the height was more of a mental barrier than physical for Thompson.
“We have pictures of her and video of her over 12 multiple times in practice,” he said. “Sometimes, athletes get inside their own head and they are their own worst enemy. This way, she could trust her training and trust her ability and not worry about a number.”
Also hitting a vault milestone was Hardin Northern’s Kenzie Shepherd, who cleared 10-4 to place second behind Thompson. That mark tied her personal best and school record.
“I want to get 10-6 to set the new school record, and advance to regionals and maybe even further,” Shepherd said.
