Findlay High’s boys tennis team had a strong start to the postseason Thursday as all three singles players and both doubles teams won out in the opening rounds of the Division I sectional tourney at the Findlay YMCA.
The sectional semifinals and finals will continue Saturday; the semifinalists have advanced to next week’s district tournament at Bowling Green State University.
Top seed Reid Teatsorth of Findlay had a bye in the opening round, then defeated Wapakoneta’s Joe Pitts 6-0, 6-1. He will face Wapakoneta’s Drew Wayman, the No. 4 seed, in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Second-seeded Max McDonald downed Bowling Green’s Stephen Kampf 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and beat Marion Hardin’s Jacob Lester 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. He will play teammate and No. 3 seed Jake Elbin in the semis on Saturday.
Elbin beat Bowling Green’s Eric Johnston 6-0, 6-1 in his first match, and Wapakoneta’s Jordan Dodds 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Findlay’s doubles team of Brent Gorman and Ian Laird, seeded No. 1, had a first-round bye and topped Lima Senior’s Brian Fruch and Travis Tuttle 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. They will face Bowling Green’s No. 4-seeded duo of Jacob Leader and Alex Messenger on Saturday in the semifinals.
Findlay’s No. 3-seeded doubles team of Hyun Chul Lee and Logan Sullivan also had a bye in the opener and defeated Lima Senior’s Kane Vastano and Markus Ly 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. They will meet Bowling Green’s Austin Ezzone and Austin Ray, seeded No. 2, on Saturday.
Sectional play begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Findlay High courts. The tourney will move indoors to the East Branch YMCA in case of inclement weather.
