She’s back, she’s healthy and that spells trouble for rival sprinters.
Running the open sprints for the first time Friday after being limited to relay races because of tendinitis in her right knee, Liberty-Benton’s Michaela Butler set meet record in the 100- and 200-meter dashes to help the Eagles to the team championship at the Blanchard Valley Conference championship meet at L-B.
Butler was named co-Most Outstanding Performer with teammate Megan Peplinski. Each won three events and was second in a fourth.
“I’m so happy to be back out here running. I’ve been gone, it seems, for so long,” said Butler, the defending state champion in the Division II 200. “The past few weeks I’ve just been doing relays, so it felt good to come out and do individual events as well as helping my team.”
Butler raced to victories in 12.19 seconds in the 100 and 25.65 in the 200. Her 100 time eclipsed the previous mark of 12.65 set by Van Buren’s Sarah Benson in 2010. She also broke her own previous 200 record of 25.83 from last year.
“I still want to improve my times,” Butler said. “Before tonight, my last 200 I didn’t even break 26. So to be in the mid 25s right now, without having run a 200 in more than a month, is absolutely great.
“In the 100, I’m running low 12s and I didn’t hit that until regional last year. I’m super-psyched about going into the postseason this year.”
Butler was part of L-B’s second-place 400 relay quartet (51.73) and the Eagles’ winning 1,600 relay team (4:12.14) with Mackenzie Briggs, Katie Hyre and Leah Recker.
Peplinski set personal records in winning the 100 intermediate hurdles (16.87) and long jump (16-111/4), and tied a season best by placing second (5-1) in the high jump.
In the 300 hurdles, Peplinski passed Arcadia’s Rebecca Kirian between the last hurdle and finish line to win in 48.50.
“I’m very thankful for that. It’s my last 300 race ever,” said the senior, who will contest the jumps and a pair of relays in the postseason.
“I’m really happy with how things panned out. In the long jump, I got a PR, so that should prepare me well for districts. In the high jump I tied my season best. I got a PR in the 100 hurdles, which was cool getting into the 16s.
“I’ve never been a long jumper; I mean, I’ve long jumped since middle school but I was never a standout. This year, I don’t know what happened but I’ll take it.”
Liberty-Benton won the team race by a wide margin, scoring 184 points to Van Buren’s 1041/2. Arlington (931/2), Pandora-Gilboa (85) and McComb (56) rounded out the top five. L-B’s Pat Wagner was named conference Coach of the Year.
“It means a lot,” Hyre said. “It’s a total team effort every time we come out here. It means so much that all these girls are willing to work hard all season long, and this is just kinds of the pivotal moment for us.
“It would not be able to be accomplished without every girl, every relay event. Field events, running events, we need everyone.”
The feature race of the evening, the 800, didn’t disappoint. Cory-Rawson’s Hannah Roebke won in 2:22.07, followed by L-B’s Recker (2:23.51) and Van Buren’s Rachell Resnik (2:27.74).
All three runners set season bests.
“That was a great race. That was excellent,” said Roebke, who was seventh at the Division III state meet in the event last year.
Roebke was pushed the entire way by Recker and Resnik.
“It’s good when you can feel them after the first lap,” she said. “It really got me to focus on my stride.
“It’s all a mental game. This late in the season, you’ve practiced as much as you can and you have to have the mental strength to get you through it.
Roebke was feeling the challenge afterwards with a queasy stomach.
“Honestly, especially coming from being a 400 runner, that extra lap may not seem like a lot but it is a lot,” she said. “That first lap, you have to push it. The second lap, it’s all mental. Especially having great competition like Leah Recker right behind me today, Rachell Resnik right behind her, I know that I was pushed today.
“And I enjoy it, even though the physical aspect of it afterwards might not be so great.”
Van Buren didn’t win an event in taking second place in the team race. The Black Knights showed plenty of depth, though, in scoring points in 16 of 17 events.
Arlington got victories from Jessica Beck in the pole vault (11-0), Lauren Willow in the high jump (5-2), the 800 relay (1:48.50) and the 400 relay (51.27). Hannah Johnson, Megan Johnson and Courtney Stoltz were members of both relay teams.
Leipsic’s Brenna Schroeder won the 400 (1:01.74) and Holly Averesch took the discus (141-10). McComb’s Molly Leppelmeier won the shot put (39-21/4).
Liberty-Benton’s Meghan Bartel won the 1,600 (5:22.94) and 3,200 (11.57.92). The Eagles also won the 3,200 relay (10:03.52).
