Findlay High School took advantage of strong pitching and timely hitting in a 4-2 win Tuesday over Whitmer in the first round of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
The Trojans (14-11) will play Toledo St. John (18-1) in the semifinals at noon, Monday at Toledo’s Mercy Field.
Chandler Stillings (4-2) went the distance for Findlay, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out five.
The Trojans managed just two hits off Whitmer’s Nick Kozak, but were able to string together three earned runs in the bottom of the second that proved to be the difference in the game.
Hunter Curlis led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Kozak hit Findlay’s Wes Breitigam. Michael Roche and Desmond Lino followed with back-to-back singles to score Curlis and Breitigam, respectively. One out later, Roche scored to make it 3-0 on a suicide squeeze by Grant Akin.
Findlay also took advantage of a sloppy Whitmer defense in the third frame.
After Whitmer (13-12) touched Stillings for an unearned run in the top of the third, the Trojans returned the favor in the bottom of the inning. Nolan Rodman reached on an error, stole second and scored making it 4-1 when Breitigam grounded to Whitmer shortstop Shamus Dempsey who sailed a throw over the head of first baseman Hunter Nichols.
Kozak also turned in a complete game effort, walking one and striking out four during his two-hitter.
