Prep softball: Elmwood, Carey, New Riegel win district tune-ups

WOODVILLE — Chelsie Schmitz homered and drove in two runs to support Miranda Benschoter’s six-hit pitching Thursday as Elmwood whipped Woodmore 6-0 in Northern Buckeye Conference play.
Jasmine Marsh tripled and drove in a run for the Royals (21-4 overall, 12-1 NBC), while Kristi Reiser had a double and an RBI and Brandie Vargas and Rebecca Harvey each singled and knocked in a run.
Elmwood also got a double and a single from Olivia Myers and a pair of singles from both Benschoter and Lindsay George.
Benschoter struck out nine and walked none in the circle for the Royals, who are tied atop the NBC standings with Eastwood with two league games to play.
Hana Zollinger hit three singles and losing pitcher Maddie Phillips had two hits for the Wildcats.
Elmwood takes on Archbold in a Division III district final at Maumee’s Rolf Park at noon on Saturday.

CAREY — Mackenzie Wentling’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning put a cap on a three-run rally and lifted Carey past Fremont St. Joseph 5-4 in a Midland Athletic League contest Thursday.
The Crimson Streaks plated two runs in the top of the eighth to grab a 4-2 lead, but the Blue Devils scored more runs in the final frame than they had in the previous seven to earn the win.
Taylor Fletcher doubled, singled and drove in a run, while Hannah Draper and Haley Hoepf each singled twice and had two RBIs for Carey (17-6, 7-3 MAL).
Natalie Zyski had a pair of singles and drove in two runs and Be Reardon notched two singles for St. Joseph (7-10, 2-8).
The Blue Devils travel to Kenton for a 5 p.m. date with New Riegel in today’s Division IV district final.

NEW RIEGEL — Taylor Arbogast and Kara Scherger each homered in their three-hit performances and combined for nine RBIs as state-ranked New Riegel rolled over North Baltimore 11-1 in five innings Thursday in Midland Athletic League play.
Arbogast finished a triple short of the cycle with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Scherger singled twice in addition to her home run and four RBIs as the Blue Jackets, who are ranked third in Division IV, improved to 24-4 overall and 9-1 in the MAL.
Taylor Kirian (23-4) struck out seven batters and allowed one earned run on eight hits with four walks to pick up the victory and also singled twice and drove in a run.
Lauren Zoeller and Elyssa Theis each singled and plated a run for New Riegel.
Makayla Rein doubled and drove in the only run for North Baltimore (10-15, 2-7).
The Blue Jackets take on Carey tonight in Kenton at 5 p.m. for a Division IV district title.
