TIFFIN — Youth was served Wednesday in the first day of competition at the Division III regional track meet at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.

Three finals in girls events were held and three individuals advanced to next week’s state track meet in Columbus. Two were freshmen, the other a sophomore.

The meet continues at 5 p.m. Friday with the remaining field events and running finals. The top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet.

McComb freshman Molly Leppelmeier won the shot put with a throw of 40-1½.

“I wanted to go more today, but what’s really important is finishing in the top four and making it on to state,” she said.

Jesse Owens Stadium on the Ohio State campus in Columbus is a place familiar to Leppelmeier. She watched oldest sister Jackie win consecutive shot put championships in 2010 and 2011, and older sister Becca capture the discus title last year.

She knows the crowd at state will be bigger and louder than at the regional.

“I know what the atmosphere is like, and that’s going to be helpful,” Leppelmeier said. “No matter what I do, my family is going to be proud of me. Just making it state is a big accomplishment. I’m excited to go down and see what I can do.”

Columbus Grove sophomore Lynea Diller was on the bubble Wednesday until her 38-0 throw sealed her trip to state with third-place finish.

“I had been throwing only 36, and that was really hard for me,” she said. “The Tinora girl (Kennedy Schlegel) threw a 37 and I thought, well, she beat me, I have to pull something out.

“I finally hit a 38, and it was like a big weight came off my shoulders. It’s the greatest feeling. Ever.”

Diller wants to go to state, do the best she can and build for the future. The first trip to the state meet can be intimidating for many athletes, but Diller said she’s ready to respond.

“I’m OK with the big crowds,” she said. “I think it actually helps me. It gets me more pumped up, knowing all eyes are on me and I have to throw my best. That’s how it was for me today. I’d look around and the people were there, so I needed to perform.”

Patrick Henry freshman Natalie Herder seemed almost disappointed by her 5-foot high jump, which placed her third. She went 5-4 last week at districts, and was hoping for similar results at Tiffin. Getting to state will suffice, especially since track isn’t Herder’s main spring sport.

“I don’t really practice a lot, because I do both softball and track,” she said. “If we ever have a conflict, softball comes first.”

Patrick Henry’s softball team is still alive in the postseason, and will play Lakota in a regional semifinal today. Herder’s enjoying the success of her freshman seasons and is hoping for an exclamation point at the state track meet.

“I’ve tried 5-5 and hit the bar with my calf, so I think I can go 5-5 at state,” she said.
