Legion baseball: Post 3 opens with doubleheader sweep

Findlay’s Legion baseball team didn’t hit any out of the park on Sunday.

But the Post 3 squad did use every nook and cranny in it.

Despite scoring 34 runs, Findlay had no home runs, no triples and only four extra-base hits. But the Post 3 team banged out 31 singles and twice put 17 runs on the board in sweeping Ashland 17-6 and 17-12 in a season-opening Buckeye American Legion League doubleheader at the Findlay High School field.

Ashland came out hitting the ball as well, collecting 26 hits on the day. Findlay parlayed six errors and three walks into a win in game one, though, and took advantage of seven Ashland errors in the nightcap.

Findlay kicked the ball around a bit too, committing eight errors.

“It look like we can hit the ball, but I don’t know if we’re going to field it,” said veteran Legion coach Dana Dunbar.

“We had three errors in the first game and five in the second and a lot of times they were routine plays. The guys were just trying to hurry things a bit.”

Findlay’s Nolan Rodman had a six-hit day for the Post 3 club, rapping two singles in the first game and four in the second.

Van Buren’s Jameson Jacobs had two doubles, two singles and drove in three runs in the opener. Liberty-Benton’s Jared Neiling had three base hits and Van Buren’s Ross Adolph and Findlay’s Grant Akin had two each.

In the second game, Chandler Stillings, a junior-to-be at Findlay High, matched Rodman with four hits and also drove in four runs. Hopewell-Loudon’s Garret Sendelbach had a double, two singles and two RBI, with Van Buren’s Isaac Sexton (2-1B) and Fostoria’s Chris Hampton (2B, 1B, 2 RBI) adding two hits each.

Though Findlay wasn’t rattling the fences, Dunbar was satisfied with the season-opening results.

“Only four of our 35 hits were extra-base hits,” he said. “But I’ll take 17 or 18 hits a game any day.”

Findlay’s Nick Bowden got the win in the first game. Neiling was the winning pitcher in game two.

Post 3’s 16-man roster for the 2014 season includes Findlay’s Rodman (C/OF), Akin (OF), Desmond Lino (P), Bowden (INF/P) and Stillings (P/U); Fostoria’s Kaleb Bemis (INF) and Hampton (INF); Neiling (INF/P) and Caleb Russell (INF/P) of Liberty-Benton, Adolph (OF), Sexton (INF) and Jacobs (INF/P) of Van Buren, Sendelbach ((P/U) from Hopewell-Loudon and Elmwood’s Jacob Firsdon (C), McComb’s Malachi Abbott (P) and North Baltimore’s Sean Watson (P).

Findlay has road games at Sidney Tuesday and Toledo on Wednesday, then returns home on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. BALL matchup with Bucyrus.
