COLUMBUS — New Riegel’s Taylor Kirian, who ended her prep softball career among Ohio’s all-time leaders in home runs and runs batted in, earned first-team all-state honors for the third straight year in all-Ohio fastpitch softball selections released on Wednesday.
Kirian belted a state single-season record 18 home runs in 2013, had eight this season, and finished her career with 31. That tied Raven Cline of The Plains Athens for the fifth-most home runs in Ohio prep softball history, according to records on the Ohio High School Athletic Association web site.
Kirian, a three-time Midland Athletic League Player of the Year, drove in 46 runs in 2014, upping her career total to 174 and moving her into third place on the all-time list. Kirian tied her own school record for hits in a season with 57 this year. The University of Akron recruit batted .576, scored 54 runs and was New Riegel’s pitching ace with a 24-5 record, 1.79 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 1752/3 innings.
Four other area softball standouts also were first-team all-Ohio picks.
Patrick Henry seniors Kristin Bostelman, a catcher who batted .506 with three home runs and a team-leading 36 RBI, and senior outfielder Rachel Nye, who hit .506, scored 33 runs and led PH in stolen bases (18), and Carey’s Makenzie Wentling, a senior catcher who hit .424, scored 36 runs and drove in 19, were first-team picks in Division IV.
Elmwood’s Rebecca Harvey, a junior infielder who batted .532 with 12 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 46 RBI, was an all-Ohio first-teamer in Division III.
Senior outfielders Hanna Brian of North Baltimore (.540, 11 RBI) and Morgan Noftz of New Riegel (.414, 20 RBI) were second-team all-Ohio picks in Division IV, along with Patrick Henry’s Natalie Herder, a freshman infielder who hit .523, drove in 28 runs and led the Patriots in hits (46), runs (45), doubles (15) and home runs (5).
