College Softball: Elmwood grad George earns academic honor

Former Elmwood High School standout and Owens Community College softball player Brittany George was one of 28 Owens athletes to receive postseason academic awards handed out by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference for the 2013-2014 school year.

George recorded a 3.66 GPA and was one of eight selections from the softball team, which led all athletic squads with eight picks. The All-Academic OCCAC team requires the completion of 24 credit hours with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

George, a freshman shortstop, completed her first season with the Express by breaking single-season school records for batting average (.549) and slugging percentage (1.059). She also led the team in runs (48), hits (56), doubles (16), triples (3), home runs (10), walks (17) and was second in RBIs (45).

For the second consecutive year, the softball team also earned the National Junior College Athletic Association Academic Team Award, which goes to any team with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. This year’s softball team achieved a cumulative 3.09 GPA.
