Track and Field: UF’s Welch 6th in hammer at U.S. championship

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — University of Findlay junior Justin Welch placed sixth in the hammer throw at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship on Thursday at Sacramento State University.

Welch, who won the Division II national championship in the event for the Oilers in 2014, recorded a toss of 229-10 to finish one spot behind Kent State’s Matthias Tayala (230-4), the only other collegiate athlete who was among the top six during the event.

Kibwe Johnson of Nike New York won the event with a heave of 234-4.
