Triathlon: Spieldenner wins Michigan event

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. — Jennifer Spieldenner, a 2004 Findlay High graduate and a team member of The Triathlon Squad, completed a strenuous stretch of races with her best finish, winning the women’s division of the Bavarian Inn Experience Triathlon on Saturday in Frankenmuth, Mich.

Spieldenner completed the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run in a time of 2:02:31.

Dead even with Abby Geurink out of the water, Spieldenner picked up almost a full minute during the bike race and added a 30-second edge during the run. Geurink finished second in the professional women’s open divison in 2:03:58.

Saturday’s triathlon was Spieldenner’s third in three weeks. The winner of the Junior Nationals in both 2004 and 2005, Spieldenner was third (2:04:24) in the 5150 Kansas Triathlon on July 20 and second (4:23:14) a week later in the Challenge New Albany Half Ironman Triathlon.

Spieldenner will now be training for the 2014 HyVee 5150 U.S. Championships to be held at the end of August in Des Moines, Iowa. Because the event offers some of the largest prize purses in the sport, it annual draws many of the top professional triathletes in the world.
