Prep golf: Trojans finish third in Knight Invite

MAUMEE — Findlay High’s boys golf team continued its consistently solid start to the 2014 season on Friday, posting a 315 total to finish third among 18 schools in the Toledo St. Francis Knight Invitational at the Maumee Bay Golf Club.
Friday’s score was almost dead on for Findlay’s season average. The Trojans posted a 311 in finishing second in a season-opening Three Rivers Athletic Conference tournament at Red Hawk Run, and carded a 321 on Thursday in finishing fourth out of 19 teams at the Hudson Invitational.
Junior Sam Griffith led Findlay for the second straight tournament, firing a 1-over 73 and placing third in the medalist standings. Spencer Shoemaker carded a 75, Trevor St. Jean a 76 and sophomore Chad Quanrud a 91 to complete Findlay’s total. Tyler Parish (92) and Van Mallett (93) rounded out Findlay’s lineup.
Toledo St. John’s won the tournament with a 298, Sylvania Northview deged Findlay 311-315 for second.

VB takes 3rd at Celina
CELINA — Versailles didn’t have the tournament medalist. But the Tigers did have depth and balanced scoring in beating 11 other schools for the championship on Friday in the Celina Invitational girls golf tournament.
Versailles was one of just two schools to have three girls break 100 on the Fox’s Den Golf Club layout. Van Buren was the other as five girls golf teams battled for top honors.
Versailles finished with a 385 team total. Fort Loramie, led by the 75 of medalist Emily Knouff, posted a 388 score to edge Van Buren (389) and Lima Shawnee (390) for second place. Findlay finished a close fifth at 398.
Zoie Nieto went 44-46 and led Van Buren with a 90. Erin Neall added a 94 and Carlee Schmelzer a 99. Ashley Franklin’s 106 completed the Black Knights total.
Suzanne Short played the front nine in 42 and led Findlay with a 90. Jordan Whitman fired a 97, with Kaelyn Kouns carding a 105 and Emma Harris a 106.

Yates hits 86 for Redmen
FOSTORIA — Rossford had three golfers shoot 80 or better on Friday when the Bulldogs captured the Lakeland Invitational at Lakeland Golf Course.
Rossford carded a 318 to win the tournament title, with Lake (323) and Cardinal Stritch (326) in the hunt as well. Arcadia, led by the 87 of Jake Hill was eighth (366) and Fostoria, which got an 86 from Trey Yates was ninth (399).
