DELAWARE — Spencer Shoemaker fired an even-par 72 on Saturday in leading Findlay High School’s boys golf team to a fifth-place finish in the Steve Youmans Classic at the Oakhaven Golf Club in Delaware.
Shoemaker tied for third in the medalist standings. His 72 topped Findlay’s scores as the Trojans posted a 316 and earned their fourth top-five finish in as many tournaments this season.
Sam Griffith scored an 80 and Van Mallett an 81 for Findlay. An 83 by Tyler Parish completed Findlay’s score and a 93 by Chad Quanrud rounded out the Trojans’ lineup.
Olentangy Liberty’s Kyle Mitchell took medalist honors with a 3-under 69. Liberty’s Tommy Marks tied Shoemaker for third with a 72 as he and Mitchell led the Patriots’ to a title-winning score of 300.
The Olentangy (Lewis Center) was second (304). Defending Division I state champion Dublin Jerome (309) edged Wellington (310) for third in a highly competitive 15-team field that saw fifth-place Findlay and 14th-place Columbus St. Charles (333) separated by just 17 strokes.
Findlay returns to Three Rivers Athletic Conference action today when the Trojans take part in the Toledo Central Catholic-sponsored Irish Invitational at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.
