Prep Golf: Liberty-Benton cruises to title

HARROD — Liberty-Benton’s top four players all finished 12th or better in the medalist standings on Tuesday when the Eagles scored a run-away victory in the 8th annual Colonial Golfers Club Tournament.

Liberty-Benton finished with a 330 team total and outdistanced the next-best team in 17-school field by 23 strokes. L-B’s Adam August played the back nine in 1-over 37 and was medalist runner-up with a 78. Kaiden Robinson was sixth in the medalist scoring with an 82, Nick Streacker tied for seventh with an 83, and Elliott Logsdon tied for 12th at 87.

James Harrod fired an 85 and Eli Runk an 87 as Bluffton (353) edged Miami Valley for second (353) thanks to a fifth-man scorecard playoff.

Patrick Henry’s Jared Nelson was the tournament medalist with a 77 and his teammate Aaron Tietje was third with a 79. The Patriots were a close fourth (356) in the team standings.

McComb, led by Drew Siferd’s 85 and an 88 from Cody Franks, finished sixth (360), Carey ninth (385) and Van Buren’s “B” team was 10th (386). Columbus Grove was 13th (417), Leipsic 15th (421) and Ada 17th (517).

Gorrell medals for H-L

BETTSVILLE — Hopewell-Loudon’s Bryce Gorrell earned medalist honors as he led the way for area golfers at Tuesday’s Old Fort Stockader Shootout at Nature Trails Golf Club.

Woodmore topped Mohawk 336-344 to win the team title in the 11-team event. Hopewell-Loudon was third with 348. St. Wendelin (379) was sixth and New Riegel (390), Arcadia (414) and Elmwood (417) finished in eighth through 10th place respectively.

Gorrell fired a 38-32 for a 3-under par 70 to win medalist honors with a four-stroke edge over Woodmore’s Alex Gedert.

Brayden Dunlap, who was the medalist at Monday’s Bucyrus Elks Invitational, and Chet Margraf gave runner-up Mohawk a solid 1-2 punch with an 81 and 82 respectively. St. Wendelin’s Peter Campbell (83) and Joey DeHaven (88) and Hopewell-Loudon’s Ryan Steinmetz (89) and Arcadia’s Alic Davis (89) fired sub-90 rounds.

Findlay fourth at St. Ignatius

AVON — Led by Spencer Shoemaker and Trevor St. Jean, Findlay High School’s boys golf team posted a 315 total on Tuesday and finished fourth in the Cleveland St. Ignatius Invitational.

Shoemaker played Avon’s Red Tail Golf Club in 74 and St. Jean had a 75. Scores of 83 by Sam Griffith and Tyler Parish completed Findlay’s total and Van Mallett shot a 93 as the Trojans placed fifth or better in their fifth straight tournament.

The Saints came marching in as the tournament wound down. Cleveland St. Xavier came in first with a 302 team total, Lakewood St. Edward was second with a 305 and St. Ignatius was third (309).

VB wins NWOGGL tourney

MAUMEE — Van Buren had a solid 1-2 punch from Zoie Nieto and Erin Neall to win the first Northwest Ohio Girls Golf League match of the season Tuesday at Brandywine Country Club.

Nieto fired a 42 and Erin Neall added a 43 as the Black Knights edged Toledo Notre Dame 185-186 for first-place in the eight-team event. Carlee Schmelzer (47) and Maria Trusty (53) completed the scoring for Van Buren.

Findlay’s Suzanne Short shared individual medalist honors with Toledo Notre Dame’s Payten Blood after both posted a 41.

The Trojans were fourth as a team with 192 strokes.
