Prep Golf Roundup: Griffith medals for Findlay at Medina invite

MEDINA — Findlay’s Sam Griffith beat Toledo St. John’s Jack Mancinotti in a scorecard playoff to capture medalist honors on Wednesday in the Walker Jones Classic held at Medina’s Shale Creek Golf Club.

Griffith, a junior and one of three Findlay players who were on last year’s state qualifying team, got to 4-under par at one point and finished with a 1-under 71. Mancinotti, the reigning Three Rivers Athletic Conference Player of the Year and runner-up in the medalist standings in last year’s Division I tournament, also fired a 71, but lost out in the scorecard playoff.

Spencer Shoemaker carded a 75, Trevor St. Jean a 76 and Van Mallet a 93 to complete Findlay’s 315 total. Tyler Parish and Logan Bern both shot 94s.

Findlay finished eighth in an elite 19-team field. Led By Mancinotti, Toledo St. John’s posted a 306 team score and edged Cincinnati St. Xavier (307) by one stroke for the championship. Cleveland St. Ignatius and Hudson tied for third (310). Van Buren also took part in the tournament, finishing 15th (332).Hunter Foltz led the Black Knights with an 80. Brandon Wehrle (82), Nick Overmyer (84) and Cole Ohlrich (86) completed the team’s scoring.

Tigers take team title

NORTH BALTIMORE — Three North Baltimore golfers recorded rounds in the 40s as the Tigers cruised to the girls team championship at Wednesday’s Elmwood Royals Open at Birch Run Golf Course.

Rachel Peters (42), Kelcie Bean (43) and Morgan Rose (47) led the way as the Tigers topped Otsego 185-202 for first place. Alexis Julien finished off North Baltimore’s winning effort with a 53.

Elmwood was fourth in the team standings with a 221 as Heather Ickes topped the Royals with a 53. Mohawk’s Katelynn Kinley finished tied for second in the individual standings with a 42 as the Warriors didn’t have enough golfers to field a full team.

Derrick Berkel fired a 45 to lead Woodmore (186) to the team title in the boys division. Elmwood was fourth with 229.

Aaron Smith led the Royals with a 51. Zach Kinney (57), Hunter Schwind (60) and Braden Dauterman (61) completed the scoring for the Royals.

Kalida finishes 4th

KALIDA — Kalida’s Evan Recker was one of the few area golfers to fire a sub-80 round as the Wildcats were fourth in the 18-team Kalida Wildcat Invitational Wednesday at Country Acres Golf Club.

Lima Bath topped Ottawa Hills 304-319 for the team championship. Wauseon edged Kalida 324-327 for third place. Arlington (343) was seventh, Ottoville (391) finished 14th and Ottawa-Glandorf (411) and Fort Jennings (413) were 17th and 18 respectively.

Zach Erhart and Trent Siebeneck each fired an 81 to back Recker. Ottoville’s Wesley Markward was the top area golfer as he finished with a 77. Cody Rettig and Cole Thomas both recorded an 82 to lead Arlington.

Wauseon’s Trevor Dominique was the medalist with a 72.

August leads L-B

PORT CLINTON — Liberty-Benton’s Adam August was one of just a handful of golfers to break 80 on the Catawba Island Club Course on Wednesday, shooting a 79 and leading the Eagles to a third-place finish in the Port Clinton Invitational.

Elliott Logsdon carded an 89, Kaiden Robinson a 91 and Jackson Logsdon a 97 to complete Liberty-Benton’s 356 team total.

Medalist Isaac Hartley fired a 77 and led Bellevue to a run-away victory in the event. The Rdemen posted a 323 team total, 18 strokes better than runner-up Parma Padua (341).

Knights 13th at Edison

HURON — Led by Carlee Schmelzer’s 87, Van Buren’s girls golf team placed 13th among 21 teams on Wednesday in the Edison Invitational held at the Thunderbird Hills South golf course in Huron.
Zoie Nieto scored a 95, Ashley Franklin shot 102 and Maria Trusty 107 for Van Buren’s 391 team total. Avon posted a 348 to win its title by one stroke over Huron (349). Shelby’s Alexis Jones was the tournament medalist with a 3-under 69.
