College Sports: UF volleyball picked 3rd in GLIAC South

The University of Findlay’s volleyball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in a preseason vote of the league’s coaches.

The Oilers recorded 38 points in the poll and trailed Ashland University (48 points, six first-place votes) and Hillsdale College (43 points, two first-place votes) in the South Division standings. Grand Valley State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division and received a league-best 55 points in the poll.

The Oilers, who have made two straight trips to the GLIAC Tournament and posted their first 20-win season since the 2006 campaign last year.

The Oilers open their season on Sept. 4 at William Jewell.

UF’s Williams honored

University of Findlay senior pitcher Alex Williams was honored for his performance during the 2014 campaign by earning first-team all-region and honorable mention all-American honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

The Perrysburg native was a first-team all-conference selection during his junior season after setting a new single-season school record by making 21 appearances out of the bullpen for the Oilers. He finished the year with a 4-3 record, three saves and a 1.70 ERA in 472/3 innings.

Wagler back at BU

Bluffton University men’s soccer team was picked to finish last in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as the league released its preseason coaches poll on Thursday.

A total of 13 juniors and seniors are back on the pitch for the Beavers this season including senior four-year starter Jordan Andrews.

Junior Chris Wagler, a Pandora-Gilboa grad, is back in goal for Bluffton after recording 40 saves during a 2013 season that saw the Beavers finish 1-15.

Bluffton opens the season with a nonconference game at Wabash on Aug. 29.
