Prep tennis: Findlay third at Norwalk Invitational

NORWALK — Findlay High School’s top doubles team of Erin Bosse and Emma Miller overcame an 0-4 start in the first set and beat Norwalk’s Karlee Talkington and Johnna Thomas 7-5, 6-2 to win the No. 2 doubles championship of the Norwalk Doubles Tennis Invitational on Saturday.
Bosse and Miller breezed into the finals, opening with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ashland’s Kaelin Frazee and Jenna McBride and routing Bellevue’s Bernadette Wolfe and Elidia Veliz 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Findlay’s No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams finished third and its No. 4 doubles team was fifth.
The Trojans compiled 66 points in the tournament, finishing third in the team standings behind the host Truckers (95) and Clyde (71).
Corrine Hoffman and Savannah Hosey, Findlay’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the tournament.
They opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Edison’s Julia Pruchniki and Chelsea Imus, dropped a close 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 decision to Norwalk’s Lauren Ott and Lauren Steffanni, then clinched third place with an 8-2 decision over Marion Harding’s Fallyn Stephens and Alyssa Moodley.
Camryn Hessling and Jenna Burget also finished third, beating Edison’s Perveer Kaur and Kristi Crumrine 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles consolation final.
Hessling and Burget won their opener 6-1, 6-0 over Marion Harding’s Alli Russell and Ashleigh Lindsay, then fell 6-1, 7-6 (1) to Norwalk’s Anessa Berry and Kaitlyn Stoll.
Tristen Spahr and Rachelle Crow finished fifth at No. 4 doubles after an 8-2 consolation round win over Ashland’s Shannon Galleher and Maddie Gray.
Clyde’s Marissa Gill and Brianna Baughman won the No. 4 doubles titles thanks to two down-to-the-wire three set matches, including a first-round 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 decision over Crow and Spahr.
Findlay opens Three Rivers Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when the Trojans host preseason favorite Toledo Notre Dame at the Findlay High School Courts.
