Prep volleyball: McComb spikes New Riegel

NEW RIEGEL — When he was named McComb’s volleyball coach a year ago, Dave Reinhart said he wanted to beef up the Panthers’ schedule.

After two matches, the Panthers have feasted on some prime competition.

Three days after beating Upper Sandusky, a Division III state semifinalist in 2013, McComb jumped to a quick lead and swept New Riegel 25-11, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday.

McComb, 27-1 and a Division VI state qualifier a year ago, improved to 2-0. New Riegel, whose only loss in 26 matches last season came in the regional semifinals, is 1-1.

Two first-team all-Oho standouts led their respective teams.
McComb’s Jenna Huffman, a 6-foot-2 junior, hammered 19 kills with three blocks and nine digs. New Riegel’s Kara Scherger, a 5-6 senior, was 46 for 47 spiking with 13 kills and 24 digs.

Makenna Babb had 10 kills, Jenna Herr seven and Molly Leppelmeier five for McComb. Babb had 19 digs, Nora Hemminger 18, Sam Thepsourinthone 11 and Loryn Huffman and Brittany Harden 10 each. Loryn Huffman also dished out 40 assists.

Scherger was backed by Taylor Arbogast’s 11 kills and 15 digs. Arbogast was 37 for 40 spiking, and Lindsay Bouillon was 80 for 81 setting with 18 assists.

ARCADIA — Abbie Dauterman did a little bit of everything in Arcadia’s 25-5, 25-8, 25-9 nonconference romp over Fostoria on Tuesday.

The senior was 21 of 21 serving with 11 aces and 17 of 17 hitting with 13 kills to go with five digs and 18 points to lead the Redskins (1-0).

Molly Glick tallied 11 points, six digs, four kills and six aces on 14 of 14 serving. Maddie Mock added 16 points and four aces and Haley Kieffer was 43 of 44 setting with 21 assists for Arcadia.

Ashton Stevenson was 62 of 62 on set attempts with 25 assists, Addy Bame notched eight digs and five kills and Bri Campbell added six kills for the Polar Bears (2-0 overall, 2-0 NWCC).

Briana Glass handed out 14 assists, Jade Clement was 11 of 11 serving with 10 assists, Kristin Wynn tallied six kills and four solo blocks and Carlee McCluer notched eight kills for the Bulldogs (0-1).

ADA — Carlee Marshall pounded seven kills and Melina Woods and Lindsay Walden added five each in powering Ada to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 volleyball win over Upper Scioto Valley on Tuesday in a nonleague matchup between the Hardin County rivals.

Woods also had six blocks and Marshall had four. Tori Wyss led Ada (2-0) with 19 digs, with Megan Simon (5 aces) adding 15.

Annie Lindeman led Ottoville with 14 kills. Nicole Kramer was 17 for 17 serving with four aces and Lexie Thorbahn had a team-high 35 assists in the season opener for both schools

CAREY– Carey’s Shelby and Sydney Kin were a combined 46 for 51 spiking with 24 kills in leading the Blue Devils to a 26-24, 25-14, 25-13 nonleague volleyball win over Riverdale on Tuesday.

Shelby Kin, a junior, was 26 for 31 spiking with 16 kills and four blocks. Sydney Kin, a freshman, was 20 for 20 spiking with eight kills and five blocks.

Sydney Wentling was 85 for 85 setting with 39 assists for Carey (3-0). Adrienne Hackworth was 18 for 18 serving with four aces and had 18 digs.

Ali Konkle and Sheyanne Wilhelm added 17 and 15 digs, respectively, for Mohawk. Chelsey Trusty added 16 assists and nine digs.

The Royals (3-0) were also led by Ashley Veryser’s 15 kills, while Jennah Wilson added 39 assists and Sarah Wilson contributed 13 digs.

Kylee Ricker was 33 of 35 setting, 10 of 10 serving and had six assists for Miller City (0-1). Jana Schroeder added a team-high five digs.

Jacque Burns dished out a team-high 21 assists, added 15 digs and was 55 of 56 setting for Hopewell-Loudon, which picked up its first win of the season (1-1).
