Prep volleyball: Another big year on the court?

Individually, it was an historic season for McComb and Upper Sandusky when they both traveled to the Ervin J. Nutter Center in Dayton for the 2013 state volleyball tournaments.
Collectively, it was also a pretty profound statement for volleyball around the area.
McComb and Upper Sandusky represented two of the best volleyball programs in The Courier’s coverage area … and there were several of them.
Thirteen area programs won 17 or more matches last season. Seven of those had 20-plus wins.
McComb suffered just one loss in 28 matches, that coming to eventual state champion Marion Local in the Division IV semifinals.
Upper Sandusky finished 24-3, the last of its losses being to eventual state champion Versailles in the Division III semifinals.
New Riegel won 25 straight matches before suffering its first loss. That came in the Division IV regional semifinals.
Liberty-Benton won 22 matches. Arlington, Leipsic and Mohawk all won 21. Twenty of the 31 schools in The Courier’s six-county coverage area ended the 2013 season with winning records.
At one point during the 2013 season, five of the 10 schools in the Blanchard Valley Conference were state-ranked. That state-wide recognition extended beyond the regular season as 16 area players earned all-Ohio honors in voting done by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
Six of those all-Ohio players, including Division IV first-teamers Jenna Huffman (McComb), Kara Scherger (New Riegel) and Kelly Nadler (Leipsic), are back for what is shaping up as another banner year for area volleyball. Upper Sandusky returns a second-team Division III all-stater in junior Jenna Holly. Liberty-Benton’s Carrigan Gray and Ottawa-Glandorf’s Niki Ellerbrock are back after earning honorable mention all-Ohio honors.
“There are so many quality players out there and a lot of quality teams in Northwest Ohio,” McComb coach Dave Reinhart said during last fall’s march to the state tournament. “It’s a great area; always has been.”
The folding of some leagues and realignment of others will create some interesting matchups this season.
When the Midland Athletic League disbanded and the BVC expanded, North Baltimore and Hopewell-Loudon, along with Riverdale from the former North Central Conference, joined the Blanchard Valley Conference. McComb entered this season as a strong favorite to defend the crown it won a year ago, but now one of the teams the Panthers will have to get past is a Hopewell-Loudon program that Reinhart guided to five consecutive state championships (1997-2001).
Upper Sandusky, which won the final NCC title, moves over to the Northern-10 this season, where the Rams will be battling Mohawk, Carey and perennial power Buckeye Central for top honors.
After claiming the last league crown in the MAL, New Riegel will be looking to win its first as a member of the Sandusky River League.
Also looking to defend league championships they won a year ago will be Leipsic (Putnam County League), Ottawa-Glandorf (Western Buckeye League and Columbus Grove, which edged Bluffton by one game for the Northwest Conference crown.
Below is a look at the area’s volleyball teams this season. No information was available on teams from North Baltimore, Van Buren and Vanlue.
