Girls basketball: Toledo Notre Dame to play for Division I state title

COLUMBUS — It will be an all Notre Dame final for the girls Division I state championship after Toledo Notre Dame Academy knocked off No. 1-ranked Newark 75-59 and Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame beat Canton McKinley 51-33 in state semifinal games at Value City Arena on Friday.

Mount Notre Dame (25-4) and Toledo Notre Dame (26-3) square off at 8:30 p.m. in today’s Division I final. The Cincinnati school has five titles; Toledo’s Notre Dame seeks its first.

Ariel Cummings had 28 points and 14 rebounds as Toledo Notre Dame Academy ended Newark’s (28-1) bid for an undefeated season. The Eagles got 13 points from Mariah Copeland and Bre Hampton-Bey had 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Notre Dame led 33-16 at the half and increased the lead to 54-34 after three quarters. Newark had been allowing 35.5 points per game

The Eagles out-rebounded Newark 46-29 and had 22 second-chance points to 10 for Newark.
Gabby Stare had 16 points for Newark.


COLUMBUS — Madison Marcum led Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame with 19 points and the Cougars will play for their sixth state title after defeating Canton McKinley 51-33 in a Division I girls basketball semifinal.

Mount Notre Dame’s most recent championship was 2009.

Abby Voss had 12 points and Maria Pisciotta added 10 for Mount Notre Dame.

McKinley (23-6) went more than three minutes without a field goal to start the third quarter.

That opened the door for Mount Notre Dame to go on a run that produced a 41-26 lead heading into the final period.

Chamera Young led McKinley with 13 points. Kierstan Bell, The Associated Press’ 2017 Ms. Ohio Basketball, was 4 for 17 shooting and had 11 points.

Division III


COLUMBUS — Gates Mills Gilmour Academy used a 3-point barrage to pull away from defending champion Columbus Africentric 65-54 on Friday in a girls Division III state semifinal at Value City Arena.

The Lancers (23-5) will play Versailles (26-3) in today’s 5:15 p.m. state final.

Gilmour made four straight 3-pointers, two by Emma Gurley, to turn a 47-44 deficit into a 56-49 lead with 2:57 to play. Gilmour made 11 3-pointers to set a Division III semifinal record; the teams combined for a record 16 3-pointers overall.

Emily Kelley led the Lancers with 24 points, while making six 3-pointers. Gurley had 17 points and Naz Hillmon scored 16.

Africentric (25-4) led Gilmour 41-34 in the third quarter, but was outscored 31-13 the rest of the way. Jordan Horston led the Nubians with 17 points.


COLUMBUS — Danielle Winner and Camille Watren had 14 points each to lead Versailles to a 58-34 win over Winchester Eastern in Friday’s second Division III semifinal.

The Tigers (26-3) go for their third state title when they face Gates Mills Gilmour Academy today. Versailles also won state championships in 2008 and 2015.

Versailles increased a 14-11 first-quarter lead to 26-15 at the half by holding the Warriors (26-2) scoreless for four minutes. Versailles scored 10 points during the stretch, capped by a pair of baskets by Winner. Kami McEldowney and Elizabeth Ording had 11 points each for Versailles.

Allison Day had 11 points for Eastern, which was playing in the state tournament for the first time since 2002.
