Prep sports: Bluffton beats Grove in NWC baseball

BLUFFTON — An eight-run first inning put Bluffton well on its way to victory Thursday and the Pirates defeated Columbus Grove 14-1 in a Northwest Conference baseball game.

Matt Bowen, Zane Myers and Tyler McLaughlin each had a pair of RBIs for Bluffton (6-6, 2-2 NWC). Bowden allowed one hit and improved to 2-2 on the mound.

Columbus Grove fell to 7-4, 1-3 NWC.

TIFFIN — Grant Vera scored on a wild pitch by Cole Noftz in the bottom of the 10th inning on Thursday to give Tiffin Calvert a 1-0 victory over New Riegel in a Sandusky Bay Conference River Division baseball game.

New Riegel’s Louisville-bound Michael Kirian and Kent State signee Peyton Deats of Calvert, both left-handers, were outstanding on the mound for eight and nine innings, respectively, but neither figured in the decision.

Nolan Wuescher pitched the last inning to gain the win after Deats struck out 18 and allowed two hits and two walks as the Senecas moved to 4-7 overall and 3-0 in the SBC.

Noftz, whose double and single accounted for all but one of New Riegel’s hits, took the loss after Kirian surrendered three hits while striking out 17 and walking four.

UPPER SANDUSKY — Jevon Dible tossed a two-hitter and went 2 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in as Upper Sandusky run-ruled Bucyrus 13-3 in six innings Thursday in Northern 10 Conference baseball.

Brenyn Marquart (2 doubles), Parker Frombaugh, Jason Holly (triple) and Arik Schneider all had two hits for Upper Sandusky (8-8, 6-2 N10).

Dible allowed two earned runs, struck out seven and walked two for the Rams.

Trevor Ley took the loss for Bucyrus (6-7, 2-4), allowing eight runs on eight hits with one strikeout and a walk before he was pulled with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.

ADA — Ada committed eight errors and allowed 22 runs on just 11 hits as a result in being drubbed 22-1 by Lincolnview on Thursday.

Lincolnview scored four runs in each of the first three innings before adding five in the fourth and six in the fifth and final frame.

The Bulldogs, who fell to 3-10 overall, tallied four hits and scored once, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

TIFFIN — New Riegel piled on 10 runs in the first two innings in a 20-hit effort as the it steamrolled Tiffin Calvert 17-4 in Thursday’s Sandusky Bay Conference River division action.

Emily Peters paced the Blue Jackets (8-3, 3-0 SBC River) with four singles and an RBI, while Brianna Gillig (2-1B, 2B, RBI) and Kristin Coleman (1B, 2B, 2 RBI) each added three hits. Kaitlyn Kirian earned the win allowing four runs, one earned, with three strikeouts across three innings.

Mallary Nielsen led Calvert’s (2-4, 1-2) offense with a single, a double and two RBIs. Bria Coleman added two singles. Ashley Reinhart took the loss.

UPPER SANDUSKY — Upper Sandusky had its bats on fire from the start Thursday as the Rams scored 16 runs in the first four innings to defeat Bucyrus 16-4 in a Northern 10 softball game.

Winning pitcher Sara Gier, Alivia Oney and Alexis Fogle each had three hits in Upper’s 18-hit attack. Oney and Fogle both tripled, and Abigail Fogle and Jenna Rodriguez each had a single and a double.

Upper improved to 11-4, 7-1 N10. Bucyrus fell to 1-11, 1-7 N10.

DOLA — Hardin Northern was its own worst enemy on Thursday allowing seven unearned run en route to an 8-6 loss to Riverside in Northwest Central Conference action.

The loss was the Polar Bears’ first NWCC loss this season as they fell to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Riverside claimed the top spot in the conference improving to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in the NWCC.

Hardin Northern’s starter Shelby Alloway allowed 10 hits and seven runs — all unearned — across six innings, including a four-run sixth inning by Riverside to take a 7-5 lead. Quinn Stewart-Evans led the offense with three hits (1B, 2-2B) and two RBIs.

Kristen Davidson (1B) and Aubrie Stillings (2B) each drove in two runs for Riverside. Shelby Giles pitched 32/3 innings in relief to earn the win.

BLUFFTON — Columbus Grove snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth Thursday and added a pari of insurance runs in the seventh as the Bulldogs defeated Bluffton 8-4 in a Northwest Conference softball game.

Teyah Sautter had a pair of hits and three RBIs for Grove (9-2, 4-1 NWC). She also struck out nine in picking up the win in the circle. Grace Schroeder singled and doubled, Tori Warnecke singled twice, and Emily Watt tripled.

Averey Rumer had a single, double and an RBI for Bluffton (8-4, 1-3 NWC). Libby Schaadt singled with two RBIs and Katie Prater doubled.

ADA — Madisyn Gossard went 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs and drove in four of Ada’s five runs to power the Bulldogs past Lincolnview 5-2 on Thursday in Northwest Conference softball.

Katie Newland took the win in the circle, allowing six hits and striking out five in a complete-game effort for Ada (9-2, 1-3 NWC).

Alexis Ennis also went 3 for 3 and Teara Coulson finished 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs.

Macala Ashbaugh took the loss for Lincolnview (3-6, 1-3), giving up 11 hits and striking out five.
