Findlay doubled up Whitehouse in one game, but got doubled up by Toledo in the second as the Post 3 American Legion team’s season came to an end on Saturday in the District 1 tournament games played at Ottawa and Defiance.
Angel Garcia’s bases-loaded two-run single to right highlighted a three-run third inning that powered Findlay to a 6-3 win over Whitehouse in a losers bracket semifinal game played at Ottawa’s Memorial Park. That win sent Findlay to a semifinal matchup at Defiance, where Toledo topped Findlay 10-5.
Against Whitehouse, Garcia also earned a save in relief of Kyle Reinbolt, who went 71/3 innings to get the win and improve his record to 7-0. Philip Buckingham (2-1B) and Austin Harper (1B, 2B) had two hits each and Zach Kreais added an RBI single. Steve Haugh had a double and two singles for Whitehouse.
In the losers bracket final, Toledo built a 9-0 lead and held on to earn a rematch with Napoleon for the District 1 tournament title. Napoleon won that game, 14-3, Sunday in Findlay to qualify for the 2017 state legion tournament July 26-30 in Lancaster.
Harper had a double and two singles and Nathan Insley poked a pair of RBI doubles against Toledo. Kennedy Miller (3 RBI), Jay Denman and Joey Peternel all had two hits for Toledo.
Findlay finished with a 28-10 slate, its best record since going 28-11 in 2003. Legion coach Dana Dunbar, unofficially, also achieved his 400th career win this season.
Five Findlay Legion players — Max Rinebolt (1st), Buckingham (SS), Harper (INF), Insley (OF) and Trevor Solether (P) — will represent the Post 3 team on Wednesday when a collection of district players take on Napoleon in an annual all-star game at Bowling Green’s Carter Park.
