Two area athletes earned honors as the University of Findlay Male and Female Athletes of the Year as released Wednesday.
Wrestler Nick Goebel (Elmwood) and volleyball player Hannah Tong (Carey) were selected after their respective strong senior seasons capped very successful collegiate careers.
In winning the James D. Houdeshell Male Athlete of the Year, Goebel compiled a 27-1 record and finished third nationally at 147 pounds to earn All-American status for the third-straight season.
He was fourth as a sophomore and third as a junior in compiling 110 career victories — seventh best in UF history.
Meanwhile, Tong captured the female equivalent in the Sharon G. Milligan Female Athlete of the Year.
She became the first UF player to be a first-team All-American and was both the Midwest Region Player of the Year and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Attacker of the Year.
She had 480 kills as a senior with 72 blocks as the Oilers went 21-10 and made their second-straight NCAA tournament appearance.
Her name is all over the UF record book as she finished fifth on the career kills list (1,563).
