Prep Soccer: Riverdale finally upends Eagles

Liberty-Benton’s girls had beaten Riverdale seven straight times including ending the Falcons’ tournament run in three of the past four seasons.
The Eagles looked primed to push the streak to eight when Savanah Richards scored late in the first half on Wednesday, but Riverdale answered with a pair of Lexie Wright goals in the final 40 minutes for a 2-1 decision in what was the first win over L-B for its senior class.
Riverdale remained perfect in the North Central Ohio Soccer Association at 3-0 and improved to 6-1-2 overall. Liberty-Benton fell to 5-3-1 and 1-1 in the NCOSA.
The two schools also stayed on par with their recent history of narrow finishes. With the one-goal difference, the two conference opponents have now had their games decided by just one goal in eight of their last 10 meetings dating back to 2012.
Reygan Frey and Brandi Borkosky added assists for the Falcons, while Katy Miller withstood 12 shots on goal with 10 saves. Borkosky and Brooke Kuenzli led with 11 intercepts and Wright paired three steals with her two goals.
Sophie Aschemeier made three saves for the Eagles.

VAN BUREN — Van Buren and Bluffton played to a 2-2 draw in Wednesday’s nonleague match.
Kayla White and Laykin Garmatter netted goals for the Pirates (2-1-3). White and Averey Rumer each had an assist and goalkeeper Hannah Yost stopped three shots.
Lisa Simmons, scored on a penalty kick, and Hannah Missler also tallied for the Black Knights (3-3-2). Annie Mowrey added an assist with Jewelya Hutchison matching Yost with three saves.
