Prep football: Pigskin Picks

It’s four weeks into the high school football season and grizzled veteran Dave Hanneman is leading the Pigskin Picks.
Here, we’ll say that again: It’s four weeks into the high school football season and grizzled veteran Dave Hanneman is leading the Pigskin Picks.
It’s such a rarity it’s hard to believe, right?
Since Hanneman and sports editor Jamie Baker agreed on every single game last week, there was no change in the standings between our pigskin prognosticators. Both posted 16-3 records, meaning Hanneman, at 61-15, carried over the two-game edge he gained on Baker (59-17) the week before.
Despite Hanneman’s edge in the predictions, the old guy seems to be getting edgier by the week. The other day he was complaining about a crick in his neck. Considering how often he keeps looking over his shoulder, we’re not surprised.
Geez, we’re not even halfway through the football season and he’s already hearing footsteps.
Then again, there is a history.
A year ago, Hanneman also had the lead in the early stages of the season, but ended up losing the title — and the Norm Nutman Trophy that goes with it — to Baker.
And we never mention when he is within earshot what we refer to as the ‘Geezer Seizure’ of 2013. That year, he had a five-game lead in the picks midway through the season, but still ended up second in a two-horse race.
Hanneman has even more reason to be concerned considering, for the fourth time in five weeks, he and Baker have disagreed on two games. The codgy coot is picking Wynford over Carey and Lakota over Sandusky St. Mary’s this week, with Baker going with the Blue Devils and Panthers in those games, respectively.

Hanneman’s Picks

LAST WEEK: 16-3; OVERALL: 61-15
FINDLAY over Toledo St. Francis — Young Trojans are still making a lot of mistakes. But they’re making progress, too.
McCOMB over Arlington — McComb has averaged over 50 points a game against three 1-3 opponents. Arlington’s also 1-3, but I don’t see McComb hanging half a hundred on the Red Devils.
NORTH BALTIMORE over Cory-Rawson — Cory-Rawson scored 61 points two weeks ago. North Baltimore gave up 74 on Friday. The guys running the scoreboard will be kept very busy in this one.
LEIPSIC over Pandora-Gilboa — Both teams beat Columbus Grove, so this is for the unofficial Putnam County League title. Oh, yeah, they’re both unbeaten in the BVC as well.
LIBERTY-BENTON over Riverdale — Falcons have scored at least 40 points in every game, but this will be their biggest test yet.
Van Buren over HOPEWELL-LOUDON — Chieftains are banged up, but I think this still might go either way.
ARCADIA over Vanlue — Win, lose or draw, this is always a good battle between two backyard rivals.
Mohawk over UPPER SANDUSKY — Young Rams will really be tested during this four-game stretch against teams with a combined 14-1 record.
WYNFORD over Carey — Wynford doesn’t win every game. But the Royals haven’t lost an N10 game since 2013.
Fostoria over WOODMORE — Redmen looking to rebound from their first loss as they hit the road for the first time this season.
Lake over ELMWOOD — Lake didn’t beat Archbold or Genoa, but the Flyers ‘D’ did hold both below their offensive average.
Ada over SPENCERVILLE — Ada’s win over Delphos Jefferson proved the Bulldogs can go toe to toe with one of the traditional power football teams in the NWC. Different school, but same scenario this week.
Convoy Crestview over COLUMBUS GROVE — I’m “in-Klined” to go with the Knights and their talented quarterback in this one.
BLUFFTON over Paulding — Great chance for the Pirates to end a three-game slide and turn things around.
ARCHBOLD over Patrick Henry — I hate to go against Bill Inselmann and the Patriots. But if he uses my picks for bulletin board motivation, I can live with that.
CELINA over Ottawa-Glandorf — Titans have been hit hard by the injury bug this season. They’re taking their lumps, but a lot of talented underclassmen are getting valuable playing time.
RIVERSIDE over Hardin Northern — Riverside got outscored 56-0 in back-to-back games against Mechanicsburg and Indian Lake. But last week the Pirates pummeled Division VI Elgin, 53-20.
LAKOTA over Sandusky St. Mary’s — Lakota is 2-2 and coming off two lopsided victories. St. Marys is 0-4. But I still think I’m taking a gamble because, historically, St. Mary’s has had the upper hand in this matchup.

Baker’s Picks

LAST WEEK: 16-3; OVERALL: 59-17
FINDLAY over Toledo St. Francis — St. Francis is a deceiving 1-3 with a pair of very narrow defeats. Watch out Trojans, don’t let the Knights spoil homecoming.
McCOMB over Arlington — Sitting at 1-3, Arlington desperately needs a win, but it probably won’t be this week.
NORTH BALTIMORE over Cory-Rawson — North Baltimore’s scoring points in bunches. Giving them up just as fast, too. Still, take the Tigers.
LEIPSIC over Pandora-Gilboa — Rockets are unbeaten but haven’t faced anyone as good as Leipsic yet.
LIBERTY-BENTON over Riverdale — Eagles roll in the BVC’s Battle of the Birds.
Van Buren over HOPEWELL-LOUDON — Still don’t have a good read on the Black Knights, but I’m thinking they win a close one this week.
ARCADIA over Vanlue — This game and some of the other BVC rivalry games should be in Week 10 every year.
Mohawk over UPPER SANDUSKY — Mohawk is 4-0 but its opponents thus far are a combined 2-14. With Wynford looming, can anyone say trap game?
Carey over WYNFORD — Time for the Blue Devils to get that monkey off their back.
Fostoria over WOODMORE — Redmen fell behind early and it spelled disaster last week. They won’t have that problem Friday night.
Lake over ELMWOOD — Lake looking to get above .500 after two straight losses.
Ada over SPENCERVILLE — Pickin’ the NWC? You may as well be throwing darts.
Convoy Crestview over COLUMBUS GROVE — Someone in the know told me the NWC isn’t very strong this season. Well, Crestview could be the best of the bunch.
BLUFFTON over Paulding — Gotta get this one, Pirates. It gets tougher from here on out.
ARCHBOLD over Patrick Henry — Archbold has beaten some solid teams and is just a hair away from being 4-0.
CELINA over Ottawa-Glandorf — Not sure the Titans can rebound against the Bulldogs from last week’s close loss.
RIVERSIDE over Hardin Northern — Might be a tough few weeks for the young Polar Bears as they get into the meat of the NWCC schedule.
Sandusky St. Mary’s over LAKOTA — Panthers get a win after a brutal early season schedule.
