College basketball: UF women rebound from overtime loss, beat Tiffin

PAINESVILLE — The University of Findlay women’s basketball team rebounded from Saturday’s overtime loss to Wayne State in a big way on Sunday, racing to a 49-30 halftime lead and rolling to a 95-63 win over Tiffin University in the second round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge played at Lake Erie College in Painesville.
Anna Hintz poured in 24 points and Haley Horstman had 17 in Sunday’s win. Dana Fricke (14) and Lauren Ruth (10) combined for 24 points off the bench. Ottawa-Glandorf graduate Elissa Ellerbrock added seven points, four rebounds and two assists for UF (1-1).
Annie Santucci scored 14 points and Allie Miller 13 for Tiffin (0-2). Liberty-Benton grad Jensen Hiegel had two points and two rebounds for the Dragons.
UF built a 20-point third-quarter lead over Wayne State in Saturday’s matchup, but couldn’t hold it as the Warriors rallied to beat the Oilers 92-88 in overtime.
Wayne State ended the third quarter on a 10-6 run to trim the deficit to 67-53, then outscored the Oilers 27-13 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Wayne State’s Shannon Wilson’s layup with four seconds remaining in regulation tied the game 80-80. Ja’nae Williams went 4 for 4 from the line and Wilson hit a pair of free throws in the final 97 seconds of overtime to seal it.
The loss spoiled a solid night for Hintz who led UF with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Horstman popped in 19 points and Lynsey Englebrecht scored 18. Ellerbrock had nine points and six rebounds.
Wilson poured in a game-high 35 points and Williams added 24 for Wayne State.
