College Basketball: Oilers dominate in GMAC debut

OWENSBORO, Ky. — The University of Findlay and Kentucky Wesleyan’s men’s basketball teams exchanged six leads in the first six minutes of Thursday’s Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener.
There wouldn’t be any more as the Oilers dominated the remaining 34 minutes and posted a 94-71 victory over the Panthers in their GMAC debut at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Findlay improves to 6-2 overall while KWC drops to 3-5.
Both teams made the NCAA tournament a year ago. The Panthers were without their top seven scorers from last year and head coach Happy Osborne (102-29) stepped down Monday due to health reasons.
UF’s edge in experience showed as it took the lead for good at 15-14 on a Trey Smith 3-pointer at the 13:06 mark.
The Oilers opened up a 54-46 lead at halftime before outscoring the Panthers 40-25 in the second half.
Findlay senior guard Martyce Kimbrough scored a season-high 27 points with four 3-pointers to front a strong team-shooting night of 47.9 percent (34 of 71), including 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Kimbrough also moved from 33rd to 30th all-time on UF’s career scoring list with 1,205 points.
Classmate Taren Sullivan is right behind him with 1,201 points in 33rd.
Sullivan and Alex White each chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds with Sullivan making four assists and four steals.
Aaron Overhiser had nine points and five rebounds off the UF bench.
The Panthers came out firing as well, shooting 63 percent (17 of 27) in the first half.
They were just 8 of 27 in the second half, including 2 for 10 from beyond the arc.
Rasheide Bell (16 points), Brandon Hatton (14) and Evan Milligan (12) all scored in double figures for KWC.
