College Basketball: ONU men, women advance to OAC tourney championships

MARIETTA — Ohio Northern’s men’s basketball team advanced to the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament championship with its 94-88 semifinal win over Marietta on Thursday.
ONU, seeded third, upset two-seed and No. 24-ranked Marietta to advance to play at top-seeded John Carroll at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Polar Bears lost to John Carroll both times they faced off this season, including a 90-80 loss on Feb. 10 and a 101-95 loss on Dec. 16.
Nate Burger put ONU (19-8) on his back, erupting for a game-high 36 points on 56 percent (14 of 25) shooting, including five 3s. Ryan Bruns chipped in 20 points on 60 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line.
Brandon Waugh scored 11 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds off the bench for the Polar Bears.
Dillon Young, who averages 14.4 points per game on the year, paced Marietta (21-6) with 21 points.

ONU women top Otterbein
ADA — The top-seeded Ohio Northern women advanced to the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament championship with an 80-72 win over Otterbein on Thursday.
The Polar Bears beat four-seed Otterbein 80-72 and advanced to play two-seed Marietta at 3 p.m. Saturday at home.
ONU beat Marietta 93-85 in double overtime on Saturday and also claimed a 72-57 win over the Pioneers on Jan. 6.
Amy Bullimore narrowly missed another double-double for the women, ranked No. 24 nationally, but still led the Polar Bears (23-6) with 20 points and nine rebounds despite fouling out of the game in just 19 minutes.
Bullimore picked up her final two fouls just two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Three others reached double figures for ONU, led by Courtney Cramer’s (Arcadia) 13 points. Emily Mescher, who scored nine in the fourth quarter, and Lindsey Black each scored 11 for ONU.
Dani Kissel led Otterbein (17-10) with a game-high 23 points.
