Prep Wrestling: Sectional Capsules

Sectional Wrestling Capsules
Division I Sectional
WHERE: Oregon Clay High School.
WHEN: Today, 5 p.m. (Championship first round and quarterfinals, first consolations); Saturday 10 a.m. (finals begin one hour after consolation semis).
TEAMS COMPETING: Anthony Wayne, Toledo Bowsher, Oregon Clay, Findlay, Fremont Ross, Perrysburg, Springfield, Toledo St. Francis, Toledo St. John’s, Toledo Start, Sylvania Northview, Sylvania Southview, Toledo Waite, Toledo Whitmer.
QUALIFICATION: Top four wrestlers at each weight advance to next week’s Division I district at Perrysburg.
WHAT TO WATCH: What was once a 10-team sectional has been bumped to 14 teams. The Northwest District lost a sectional in Division I so everyone will compete in the same sectional for the first time ever. Host Clay is the team to beat but Findlay, Fremont Ross and Perrysburg should also have strong showings. The Trojans will be looking to rebound after a tough Three Rivers Athletic Conference tournament in which they were shut out of individual titles.
Findlay will be looking to match last year’s total of 10 district qualifiers. Jonah Smith (126), Seth Douglas (145), Josiah Trevino (170), Zach Bryant (195), Boston Dubocq and Dru Hernandez (160) are all returning district qualifiers for the Trojans.
Division II Sectional
WHERE: Clyde High School.
WHEN: Saturday, 10 a.m. (Finals begin one hour after the consolation semis).
TEAMS COMPETING: Bowling Green, Toledo Central Catholic, Clyde, Tiffin Columbian, Kenton, Maumee, Port Clinton, Toledo Rogers, Toledo Scott, Upper Sandusky, Toledo Woodward.
QUALIFICATION: Top four wrestlers at each weight advance to next week’s Division II district at Norwalk.
WHAT TO WATCH: Upper Sandusky was second at last year’s Clyde Sectional and advanced nine wrestlers to districts. Senior Noah Clary (182) will begin his quest for a third straight trip to state. He is a returning sectional champ as is teammate Mitchell DeWitt (195). Ronan Gullifer (113), Conner Johnston (220), Brandon Derr (170) and Brayzin McDaniel (132) are also returning district qualifiers for the Rams.
Division III Sectional
WHERE: Van Buren High School.
WHEN: Today, 5 p.m. (Championship first round and quarterfinals, first consolations); Saturday 10 a.m. (finals begin one hour after consolation semis).
TEAMS COMPETING: Arcadia, Tiffin Calvert, Carey, Elmwood, Fostoria, Hopewell-Loudon, Lakota, Liberty-Benton, McComb, Mohawk, North Baltimore, Patrick Henry, Riverdale, Van Buren.
QUALIFICATION: Top four wrestlers at each weight advance to next week’s Division III district at Defiance.
WHAT TO WATCH: Some solid individual performers at many weights but likely not as deep as the rest of the sectionals feeding into the Defiance District. Mohawk and Elmwood are the early leaders in the clubhouse to win the team championship. The Warriors boast a pair of past state qualifiers in Daniel Price (132) and Parker Brown (170) while Elmwood’s team is anchored by 195-pound senior Dylan Hinton. Hinton has been one of the most dominating wrestlers in the area this season and will wrestle for Division II Indianapolis. Other individuals to watch include unbeaten North Baltimore senior David Patterson (138), Carey sophomore state placer Tanner May (182) and Calvert state qualifier Connor Kwiat, who was forced to default out of last week’s Sandusky Bay Conference tourney.
Patrick Henry also has a pair of standouts in Northwest Ohio Athletic League champ T.J. Rhamy and senior Max Neiling. Patriots’ state qualifier Wil Morrow has missed much of the season with injuries.
Division III Sectional
WHERE: Lima Central Catholic High School.
WHEN: Today, 5 p.m. (Championship first round and quarterfinals, first consolations); Saturday 9:30 a.m. (finals begin one hour after consolation semis).
TEAMS COMPETING: Ada, Allen East, Bluffton, Coldwater, Columbus Grove, Cory-Rawson, Delphos Jefferson, Lima Central Catholic, Lincolnview, Pandora-Gilboa, Parkway, Spencerville, Delphos St. John’s, Ottawa-Glandorf, Wayne Trace.
QUALIFICATION: Top four wrestlers at each weight advance to next week’s Division III district at Troy.
WHAT TO WATCH: Ottawa-Glandorf won its first sectional title in more than 30 years last season and the Titans will try and do it again this week at LCC after finishing second in last week’s Western Buckeye League tournament.
The Titans have several strong individuals including two-time state placer Daniel Beemer (195) and returning state qualifier Danny Rosales. Grant Goecke is coming off a winning performance at the WBL and Isaac Hernandez, Evan Ellerbrock and Brent Siefker also had strong tournaments.
Bluffton’s DeAndre Nassar and Ada’s Chase Sumner, both returning state qualifiers, should also be rested and ready to go.
NOTE: Single session tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students. All-session passes for all three sessions at two-day tournaments are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
