Prep track: Grove rolls to girls title

COLUMBUS GROVE — Most track and field athletes set goals for the spring season. Those goals serve as motivation during the winter months and, as we’ve seen for much of this spring, the cold, damp early part of the season.

Ottoville senior Brendan Siefker, the defending Division III state champ in the 1,600-meter run, didn’t quite reach his goal at Friday’s Columbus Grove Bulldog Invitational at Clymer Stadium. He had to settle for a mere meet record while winning in 4:31.32.

“I’m happy with where I’m at at this point. I was hoping to go into the 4:20s today and it didn’t happen,” said Siefker, who due to poor weather and a senior trip was running in only his second meet of the year. “I’ll have to adjust and see if I can improve by the time of the next invitational.”

Siefker also won the 800 (2:04.04) and 3,200 (10:04.61).

“I’ve set a goal for the 1,600 this year,” he said. “I ran 4:13 at state last year and I’d like to knock a couple seconds off that. Going under 4:10 would be great. I’ve been hovering around that mark, so to get that wold be fun.”

Siefker might have enjoyed himself the most Friday in an event he didn’t win. Nolan German, Conner Wannemacher and Kyle Looser set the table for Ottoville’s second-place 3,200 relay squad.

“In my last three years of running, we never had put much emphasis before on the 4×8,” Siefker said. “This year, we have a group of young guys who are really enthusiastic about it. It’s really fun to be a part of that. It’s something different for me, and something that I really enjoy.”

Columbus Grove’s Rylee Sybert enjoyed being a four-time winner Friday. She won the 100 (13.24) and 200 (27.28); joined Carlee McCluer, Abigail Gladwell and Alycea Ruhlen to win the 400 relay (52.90); and teamed with McCluer, Ruhlen and Lauren Benroth to win the 800 relay (1:49.33).

Grove finished either first or second, and several times both, in every track event to dominate the girls team championship with 163 points. Anna was second with 63 points, with Botkins (59), Arlington (57) and Delphos St. John’s rounding out the top five.

“I ran 12.7 last year,” Sybert said of a sixth-place finish at state. “I’m hoping to get down from there. The school record is 12.3, I have that hanging in my room. I want to get that so bad. I think thst would be awesome.”

Anne (Stechschulte) Heffner and Kelly Irwin have the Grove record in the 100, with Heffner holding the 200 record.

“The 200, I want to get back into the 25s, get real low there,” Sybert said. “The school record is 25.5, I believe, and I’d like to get that and get into the 24s, maybe the high 24s. That would be pretty awesome.”

Grove’s Alyssa Ellerbrock was a triple winner, winning the 1,600 in 5:31.47, and joining Taylor Ellerbrock, Addison Schafer and Erin Downing to win the 3,200 relay in 10:13.00.

She saved her best for last, setting a meet record in the 3,200 in 11:31.57. That was more than 30 seconds better than the old mark of 12:01.80, set in 2014 by Arlington’s Arden McMath. Downing also broke the old record and was second in 11:53.80.

“I was not expecting the time that I did,” Ellerbrock said. “I PR’ed by almost 20 seconds. I was just hoping to break the school record, which was 11:45, and I went a lot faster than that.

“My goal for this whole year is 11:20, so now being that close already is a good sign for the rest of the season.”

Columbus Grove’s success took coach Tim Staley by surprise. The Bulldogs, like everyone else, have been happy just being outside to practice so far this spring.

“Wow, I was not expecting that,” Staley said. “I think some of the girls realized this is the last invitiational on their home track, so that was some motivation. You can’t ask for anything better than we did today.”

On the boys side, Anna ran away with the team title with 138 points. McComb was second with 80 points, and Columbus Grove (761/2), Ottoville (45) and Ada (41) finished in the top five.

McComb coach Kris Alge was encouraged by his team’s result, considering a couple of athletes played Friday in a Blanchard Valley Conference baseball game and had to miss the meet.

“We have a real nice distance crew with Jacob Rider leading us,” Alge said. “The nice thing with this year’s team is we have some good field event guys.

“Christian Currie in the throws, and Ryan Montague in the jumps are key for us. Montague just missed our school record in the long jump by half an inch tonight.

“This is the most complete team I think we’ve ever had, at least since 2000 or 2001.”

Montague won the long jump at 20-81/2 and Currie took the shot with a 49-111/2. McComb’s 3,200 relay quartet of Justin Rode, Seth Leader, Aaron Rider and Jacob Rider was first in 8:58.20.
