Prep Track Roundup: Layne, relay advance for FHS girls team

FINDLAY HIGH SCHOOL’S Katie Corbin leads the pack during the first leg of the girls 3,200 relay at Wednesday’s Division I district track meet at Findlay’s Cooper Tire Track. Corbin teamed with Claire Short, Megan Casata and Olivia Sellers to finish second in the race and qualify for next week’s Division I regional at Amherst Steele.

Findlay High School’s girls track team advanced high jumper Lexie Layne and its 3,200-meter relay quartet to next week’s regional in the first day of competition at the Division I district meet and the Cooper Tire Track and Field Complex.

Findlay’s Katie Corbin, Claire Short, Megan Casata and Olivia Sellers placed second in the 3,200 relay in 10:00.69. Layne was third in the high jump at 5-1.

The top four finishers in each event advance to next week’s regional meet at Amherst Steele.

Findlay’s Caitlyn Lentz finished sixth in the high jump at 4-10.

FINDLAY HIGH SCHOOL’S Lexie Layne clears the bar at 5-1 on her way to a third-place finish in the girls high jump. Layne qualified for regionals in the event and will compete in the long jump when the meet continues on Friday.

With three events scored, Findlay’s girls are in third place with 17 points. Fremont Ross leads with 28 points, followed by Lexington (18).

Findlay’s boys 3,200 relay of Cole Sprague, Trevor Hellman, Jordan Halliday, Greg Konecny were seventh in 8:36.10.

Through four events, Norwalk leads the boys team race with 23 points, followed by Celina (21) and Ashland (17). Findlay is in 13th place with two points.

The meet will wrap up on Friday.

O-G pair advances

DEFIANCE — Ottawa-Glandorf’s Caleb Verhoff finished third in the boys shot put and O-G’s Grace Hoffman was third in girls discus Wednesday at the Division II district track and field meet at Defiance High School.

Verhoff and Hoffman each advanced to next week’s regional meet at Piqua High School. The top four finishers in each event at the district meet move on to the regional.

Verhoff threw 49-1/2 and Hoffman went 119-1.

Ottawa-Glandorf’s girls 3,200 relay quartet of Lauren Siefker, Emily Wischmeyer, Austin Palmer and Maggie Rupp placed sixth in 10:27.25. Brittany Herman was seventh in the discus at 105-9.

With three events completed, O-G’s girls are in fourth place with 11 points. Van Wert leads with 161/2 points, followed by Toledo Central Catholic (16) and Napoleon (12). Fostoria competed but did not score.

O-G’s boys 3,200 relay team of Connor Niese, Josh Rosengarten, Garret Croy and Brent Siefker was eighth in 8:38.85.

Ottawa-Glandorf’s boys are 10th through four events with seven points. Wauseon leads with 25 points, followed by Van Wert (19) and Toledo Central Catholic (17). Fostoria competed but did not score.

The meet continues Friday with the remaining field events beginning at 4 p.m. and running finals at 5:45.

Upper’s Ham qualifies

OAK HARBOR — Upper Sandusky’s Dylan Ham advanced to next week’s regional meet with a third-place showing in the boys shot put at Wednesday’s first day of competition at the Division II district track and field meet at Oak Harbor.

Ham threw 51-41/4 to move on to the regional meet at Lexington. The top four finishers in each event at the district meet advance to the regional.

Upper’s Michael Verdugo just missed a trip to the regional with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault at 13-6.

With four events scored, Upper Sandusky’s boys are in seventh place with 10 points. Sandusky Perkins leads with 29 points, followed by Willard (20) and Shelby (18).

Upper Sandusky’s girls 3,200-meter relay quartet of Madelyn Shasteen, Maya Collins, Madison McLaughlin and Adriane Weininger placed seventh in 10:40.22.

Through three events, Upper’s girls are 12th with two points. Galion leads with 23 points, followed by Oak Harbor (15) and Shelby (12).

The meet continues Friday with the remaining field events starting at 4 p.m. and the running finals at 5.
