NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Mayor Ray Nagin has taken the stand in his federal corruption trial.

Nagin started his testimony Thursday by discussing his relationship with Rodney Williams. Williams was the lead prosecution witness when the trial began last week. He was the first of five witnesses who said they were involved in bribing Nagin for city contract work.

Democrat Nagin was indicted on 21 criminal counts after leaving office in 2010.

Prosecutors allege that corruption spanned his two terms and included the period after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, when contractors sought to benefit from potentially lucrative rebuilding jobs in the devastated city.
