NYC warden transferred after inmate cell death

NEW YORK (AP) — The warden of the New York City jail facility where a mentally ill veteran died in February after being found in a cell where officials told The Associated Press he “baked to death” has been demoted and transferred.

Department of Correction officials say Thursday that Warden Rose Argo is being transferred from the 2,100-inmate facility where 56-year-old former Marine Jerome Murdough was housed in a mental observation unit to supervise another one that doesn’t hold mentally ill inmates.

They say a supervisor in charge of monitoring the heating system at the prison also was transferred.

And an already-suspended correction officer on post when Murdough died has been suspended another 10 days without pay. That’s the maximum amount allowed under city law.

Prosecutors in the Bronx are investigating.
