KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — Natalie Geisenberger of Germany has a commanding lead at the midway point of the Olympic women’s luge competition, leading countrywoman Tatjana Huefner by more than three-quarters of a second.

Erin Hamlin of Remsen, N.Y., is in third place, as she tries to become the first American to win an Olympic medal in singles luge.

Geisenberger’s two-run time was 1 minute, 39.814 seconds. Huefner was the Olympic champion in Vancouver and is 0.766 seconds behind Geisenberger, the current world and World Cup titleholder.

Hamlin is 0.052 seconds behind Huefner in the race for silver.

If either Geisenberger or Huefner win, it would be the fifth straight Olympics where a German woman grabbed the gold medal.
