NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets pitchers have ended a strange streak of futility, finally getting a hit this year.

After Mets pitchers started the season by going 0 for 64, Jacob deGrom lined a single to center field in his first major league at-bat Thursday night against the New York Yankees.

The hit came in the third inning and the crowd at Citi Field gave deGrom a loud ovation. DeGrom was a shortstop and reliever in college, and pitched in place of injured starter Dillon Gee. Gee was hitless in 14 at-bats.

The Mets long ago broke the record for the longest hitless drought by a team’s pitchers to begin a season. The 1914 St. Louis Browns started out 0 for 45, the Mets said in citing the Elias Sports Bureau.
