Isabelle ‘Izzy’ Zender Wiget

wigetobitmugIsabelle “Izzy” Zender Wiget, 97, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Altercare Rehabilitation Center in Kent, OH.
One of 16 children born in Carey (April 20, 1917) to Katherine (Braun) and Frank Zender, she is preceded in death by 14 of her siblings, and survived by her beloved brother, Ralph Zender and his dear wife, Ruth, of Carey, as well as her cherished sister in-law, Reva Zender of Sycamore.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 25 years, Floyd N. Wiget, and survived by their only daughter, Hazel A. Sheppard and her husband Wayne of Rockport, MA. as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Zender and Wiget families in Ohio.
After traveling many years with Floyd in the U.S. Air Force, Izzy returned to her home town of Carey from Saugus, MA. She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation, the Rosary Altar Society, a five year sponsor for the RCIA, an employee of Carey Public Schools, and a private care giver for Karl Braun and later, Josephine Newhard. In 2008, Isabelle donated her home of 18 years (purchased from the Newhard family after Josephine’s passing) at 202 West Findlay Street to the Carey Historical Society to be used as their museum. Upon Izzy’s insistence (in honor of the Newhard family who’d owned the house since 1853), the museum is named the Newhard House.
Izzy is cherished as a loving (and fun) mother, a sweet (and fun) sister, and a fond (and fun) aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at STOMBAUGH-BATTON FUNERAL HOME in Carey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Original Shrine Church in Carey.
Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery near Carey.
Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 25 S. Main Street, Suite 7, Munroe Falls, OH 44262.
