Don Clarence “Johnny” Dietsch, 97, of Findlay, passed away at 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the Heritage Manor, Findlay. Johnny was born on June 29, 1916, to the late Charles and Margaretha (Gerber) Dietsch in Findlay. He first married Willa Gene Wright on October 21, 1939, and she preceded him in death on October 8, 1994. Then he married Kathleen Strait on June 28, 1997 and she passed away on May 3, 2011.
Johnny is survived by his sons: William (Sharon) Dietsch of Vicksburg, MI and Daniel (Susan) Dietsch of Findlay; stepson, Charles (Sandy) Colegrove of Williamsburg, VA; sister, Betty Baughman of Findlay; five grandchildren: Donald, Douglas (Marrilee), Aaron, Andrew Dietsch, and Deborah (Michael) Novak; step-granddaughters: Whitney Royster and Erin Colegrove; seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Ralph “Bus,” Roy “Snitz,” Edward, Chris “Bud,” Earnest “Benny,” Charles Dietsch; sisters: Evelyn Jensen, Anna Dietsch, Clair Ohse, and Hilda “Gilly” Bennett; and by one granddaughter, Deborah Novak and one great-grandson.
Johnny served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was the last of three brothers who opened Dietsch Brothers Fine Candy and Ice Cream on December 7, 1937. Johnny was the candy maker, hand dipping fine chocolates. In 1955, the store at 400 West Main Cross was built and several additions later is still at that address. Johnny retired in 1981.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was very active and was a deacon. He also attended Faith Presbyterian Church. His life was the family business, family, church, woodworking and fishing.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Heritage and Bridge Home Health & Hospice staffs for their excellent care and compassion as he transitioned through the final chapter of his life.
Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Pastor Richard Pulling will officiate and burial will be private. Memorials may be made to Bridge Home Health and Hospice, Findlay City Mission, First Christian Church, and/or the charity of the donor’s choice.
