Verna Catherine Gnew, 94, of Findlay, formally of Maple Heights, Ohio, died June 16, 2014. She was born May 6, 1920 in Wehrum, Indiana County, PA to the late Gordon and C. Elizabeth (Stewart) Francis.
Verna was a graduate of Sagamore High School, Sagamore, PA in 1937 and Indiana State Teachers College of Pennsylvania, class of 1943. She began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in western PA, moving to Cleveland, OH to work in a machine shop during WWII. After marrying she returned to teaching in Maple Heights, OH where she retired from teaching fifth grade at Rockside Elementary in 1977.
She married Edwin Casmir Gnew May 24, 1947 and he preceded her in death July 15, 1988. Verna was also preceded in death by a brother, William Francis in 1986.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilynn (John deceased) C. Dunn of Findlay, OH and a son, John (Cynthia) C. Gnew of Plano, TX. Verna leaves behind seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Verna was a member of First Lutheran Church, Findlay where she was a member of the Lydia and Martha Circles. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Findlay Chapter 23. She was a member of Town and Campus, a supporting group of The University of Findlay, the Findlay Book Club and Hancock County Retired Teachers Association. Verna was an avid traveler and not only traveled in all 50 of the states but worldwide.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME and one hour (10:00-11:00 a.m.) prior to the funeral. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at First Lutheran Church, Findlay, OH. Pastor Robert Cochran will officiate. A luncheon will follow.
