TAMPA, Fla. — Douglas Lee “Doug” Freed, 52, of Tampa, FL and formerly of Jenera, Ohio, passed away on August 2, 2014. He was born May 16, 1962 in Bluffton, Ohio to H. John and Anna J. (Reichley) Freed. Doug graduated from Arlington High School in 1980. He played baseball, basketball and football. He was a senior and tri-captain on the 1979 football team that went 10-0 in the BVC. The team was ranked #1 in the UPI. Doug was named “Class A Player of The Year” for the State of Ohio in 1979.
Doug attended Ball State University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in Business Management. He married Melanie Meyer on July 12, 1986 and they were divorced in 1997. To this marriage two sons were born: Joshua Douglas and Justin Stephen. They survive and reside in Tampa, FL. He is survived by his father; two brothers: Jeffrey (Colleen) Freed; Scott (Cheryl) Freed; one sister: Cheryl (Jon) Gast; six nieces: Ashley (Kyle) Dinger, Kristen Freed, Alissa (Riley) Brookings, Lindsay Pelphrey, Jessalyn (Gast) (Mike) Tester, Amber Gast, five nephews: Joshua & Trever Gast, Corey, Jordan, & Matthew Freed, and 3 great-nephews: Nathan Tester, and Bennett and Colton Dinger. He was preceded in death by his mother.
He was also a loving and caring father to his sons and their friends, who called him “Daddy Doug”. Doug loved to fish, watch sports, and hang with his friends and sons. Doug loved going to Little Gasparilla Island (an island off the coast of Florida that you can only get to by boat). The body was cremated and his ashes will be taken to Little Gasparilla Island for a memorial service at a later date.
A memorial service will be Saturday, September 20, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Evangelical Church, Jenera, Ohio at 1:30 p.m., with visitation from 12:30 p.m. up to the time of the service. Pastor Steve Edminston and Pastor Kent Wilson will be officiating. A few of Doug’s remains will be buried at St Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Jenera, Ohio. Local arrangements entrusted with CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Arlington.
