COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The family of cartoonist Chester Gould has donated a collection of Gould’s original Dick Tracy comic strips and related materials to a cartoon library and museum in Ohio
Gould died in 1985. He wrote and drew the Dick Tracy newspaper comic strips from 1931 until retiring in 1977. His daughter and two grandchildren gave a collection of his work to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University.
Ohio State says the collection consists of more than 850 original Dick Tracy comic strips along with 64 original Sunday strips. Highlights include the original art for the first 30 days of the strip and Gould’s drawing board on which he created the comic strip.
The collection will be catalogued and made available to researchers in the coming months.
