GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Homer Bailey’s six-year, $105 million deal puts him in position to become a cornerstone of the Cincinnati Reds rotation for a long time.
The right-hander with two no-hitters to his credit decided he wanted to stay with Cincinnati so long as the team was committed to taking the next step toward a championship. The Reds have made the playoffs in three of the past four years, but failed to get past the first round.
Bailey’s deal gives the Reds four players with significant contracts. Joey Votto is signed through 2023, Brandon Phillips through 2017 and Jay Bruce through 2016. In 2016, those four alone will be owed more than $63 million.
