COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Democrat Ed FitzGerald faces a primary challenge in May from Larry Ealy (EE’-lee), a challenger of the establishment — particularly judges and police — who’s filed dozens of lawsuits in Ohio courts.
The winner faces Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) this fall.
The 45-year-old FitzGerald has led populous Cuyahoga County in Cleveland since 2011. Voters selected the former FBI agent and assistant county prosecutor to clean up and rebuild government after a corruption scandal. Republicans challenge FitzGerald’s claims he’s put the county back on strong ethical footing.
The 51-year-old Ealy, of Trotwood, formerly ran for Dayton mayor. He has no campaign website nor reported fundraising. He operates his campaign from a personal cellphone.
FitzGerald’s running mate is Yellow Springs lawyer Sharen Neuhardt. Ealy’s is Ken Gray of Cincinnati.
