Court Upholds Conviction Of Ex-Ohio Official

CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld an ex-Ohio official’s conviction and sentence in a public corruption case.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Wednesday affirmed former Cuyahoga County Commissoner Jimmy Dimora’s 2012 conviction and 28-year sentence on 32 bribery-related offenses.

Dimora had asked the court to drop four charges and grant a new trial on the others. His attorney argued the judge should have allowed jurors to see ethics reports that the attorney said would prove Dimora received gifts and not bribes.

The three-judge appeals panel found the reports wouldn’t have mattered because the evidence against the former Democratic party chairman was “overwhelming.”

Dimora’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call for comment.

Prosecutors said county officials, employees and contractors traded bribes for government jobs and contracts.
