Man Shot At Ohio VA Hospital Thought Gun Was Toy

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — An employee shot in the ankle at an Ohio veterans hospital says he thought the retired co-worker charged in the shooting had a toy gun and came to play cards.

Paul Burnside tells the Dayton Daily News ( ) he and another person struggled with suspect Neil Moore in a break room Monday. Burnside says someone pushed Moore’s hand holding the gun, and a shot hit the ceiling. Burnside says he and someone else grabbed Moore’s arms, and a second shot hit Burnside.

Authorities say Moore warned those in the room not to “mess” with his family. Burnside says he’s unsure who Moore was warning.

Burnside couldn’t be reached Thursday. His telephone listings are disconnected.

Moore is charged with an assault count and a weapons count. His attorney didn’t return calls.
