Manziel Passes First Test With Browns

CLEVELAND (AP) — Johnny Manziel passed his first weekend in the NFL without any problems. The rookie quarterback’s next steps will be much more challenging and competitive.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said Manziel had a “positive” experience in Cleveland’s rookie minicamp, which had limited media access as the team attempts to control the hype around the popular Texas A&M star.

Pettine praised Manziel’s quick grasp of a new playbook, and said there were some expected “ragged” moments for QB and Cleveland’s other draft picks and free agents during the workouts.

Pettine said other players immediately gravitated toward Manziel, who doesn’t display a “diva-type personality.”

Manziel will take part in organized team activities this week, when he will begin competing with Brian Hoyer for the starting job. Pettine said Hoyer, who is coming off knee surgery, may be allowed to take part in some simulated 11-on-11 drills.
